I am not quite familiar with this design. However, I suspect that the dome is not a dome. Rather, I suspect it was supposed to be a force field bubble.Β Such a system would allow the pilot in his environmental suit, which afforded protection from vacuum, while the bubble protected him from debris, radiation, etc... Its safer than sitting in a bee and operating in a shirtsleeve environment, which most images depict the pilot doing. Once at the repair site, the crew-person could drop the bubble and go to work. But what do I know, "I'm just a guy in a plaid jacket". Whether it's kosher or not, I like the idea. Great work.

I think the movieverse was a lot more solid with the workbee...
I'm sorry, but that puppy is just BEGGING to crack like an egg.
And it's supposed to be the pod that does hard labor...?
Noooo sireebob...

There's something about this design that's unintentionally hilarious. It's like some sort of space toilet.

I can see why it wasn't used. That dome atop looks pointless as the pilot is wearing a vacc suit anyway, be better off with an open frame structure with physical grapplers with a cockpit either in the frame itself or the machine totally teleoperated like an ROV.
