Something about this design reminds me of a World War 2 observation blimp, like the USN Macon or Akron.
It has such a clean, organic shape; kinda simple and primitive for the Trek world, yet technologically advanced enough to look futuristic.

The great thing.
She's the Enterprise of her era. Literally. The ol E was the pride of the Yorktown fleet.
I share your observations, too, regarding the general design. I always imagined one of these babies hovering over head as small ships engaged in toe-to-toe action with Romulan vessels, with the backdrop of some big nebula cloud.
