It's really fun learning German with this, I have 2 books on German language: German Grammer and German Dictionary. It's not enough to keep me motivated, and it's not a complete set, so I love this! Those books of mine are no use
Dank!

Wow, tolle Idee!^^ Dann solltest du aber in deiner nächsten Lektion vielleicht auch erwähnen, dass es sich hierbei um die bestimmten Artikel handelt und dass es auch unbestimmte gibt. Ansonsten echt gut gemacht!
For all of those readers who ask why an item without a gender (like an apple) has a gender based substantive: In linguistics you have to differ between the natural gender (which is called "Sexus") and the grammatical gender ("Genus"). Usually, only substantives that refer to animate beings have a natural gender, but in German EVERY substantive has a grammatical gender.
If a substantive has a Sexus, the Genus is the same gender in the majority of cases:
der Mann (the man) - die Frau (the woman) - der Vater (the father) - die Mutter (the mother) - der Lehrer (the male teacher) - die Lehrerin (the female teacher) - der Hengst (the stallion) - die Stute (the mare) - der Rüde (the male dog) - die Hündin (the female dog) ...
But remember there are also exceptions! E.g.: das Mädchen (the girl; neuter Genus although the Sexus is female) - der Mensch (the human; male Genus regardless of which Sexus) - die Person (the person; female Genus regardless of which Sexus) ...
The allocation of the Genus to a substantive without Sexus is very random, but there are also some regularitys. For an instance, infinitives used as a noun are ALWAYS neuter: das Singen (the singing) - das Schreiben (the writing) etc.
Hope that explanation helped a little! ^^ And sorry for my poor English. XD

Isn't there a form of "der" using "den" instead?

den is to show a case like the dative or after prepositions

Also, just a quick question. How come items such as an apple and pen have a gender based substantive when the item doesn't have a gender?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
caramellique In reply to wordlefan [2014-04-12 19:09:10 +0000 UTC]
for the same reason why french nouns have a gender
because when they developed the language, they picked random nouns to be either feminine or masculine
it doesnt affect anything, though, so try not to worry about it too much

oh fun, articles o3o; should be interesting when you get on to the cases, then prepositions with cases...
in fairness, there are some guidelines, though these often have exceptions -just sayin' to not scare off people. German really isn't that bad!

I'm so sorry to write so many comments but I've just got a thought!
When I'm learning words with genders I tend to mark them with colors: red for female, blue for male and grey for neuter. Since your color sheme of lessons posses similar colors maybe it would be nice to help people by marking word with those color! Though, it's just a thought!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Metterschlingel In reply to Mirix [2012-10-02 07:59:01 +0000 UTC]
no problem
I think the idea is helpful when you write it by yourself, but I think when it is already written in the right colors the users don't think about it enough, because the human brain is lazy.

Before I'll do exercises I'd like to mention that I barely can see the text on the background? Could you make the text a little bit darker, please?

Metterschlingel In reply to Mirix [2012-10-02 08:03:10 +0000 UTC]
oh, okay. I will change it in the next lessen.
Maybe your desktop is too bright or too less contrast, as you are the first who write that. But no problem will darken the text in the next lesson.

Thanks! I think it might be my laptop's screen problem, depending from angle I look at it, it changes colors and brightness Though, I'd not mind if you would still make the font a tad darker ^^
