Description ~CrystalKyuubi asked for a tutorial on how I did the effects on my Surveyor picture. I didn't have progress shots, so I tried to detail how I used layer effects to 'spruce up' the basic painting I had made. I hope it can help someone.

Hibbary's Paper Textures (the one I used in this tutorial is in here)

How much does the PaintTool SAI cost? Does itΒ have a monthly fee?

It costs about $70 USD, and there is no monthly fee!

It still amazes me that you could do this on 5 layers without messing up!

If you erase don't you see the white canvas underneath?

No no I messed up so many times! But that's the thing about digital; you can paint over it a million times until it looks okay. In my case yes I would have seen the white if I'd erased on the base painting layer. So I simply never erased; I just eyedroppered whatever color was 'right' and filled in in.Β Basically, I did the second step like one would do a normal traditional painting (but with a lot less mess).Β You'll notice that on the 'base painting' all the coloring can be boiled down to just two or three colors sitting next to each other in big chunks; that stuff is easy to tweak and push around. All the 'smooth lighting' that could be easily messed up was done on its own layer.

You're welcome. I apologize that I don't have process steps for the actual underpainting. But honestly.... it was just blocks of color shaded with dark purple, all using that brush I linked above. The use of the same brush is what brings everything together. Kind of hard to really make a 'tutorial' for the process and you already seem to have the skillz to make pretty darn nice digital paintings!

Aw, thank you! :3
Yeah, I've mostly gotten the hang of basic painting; what I'm shaky on is the extra stuff - different textures and styles and different stuff like that. I'll definitely be working with this when I have some more time!

It's like all those how to draw books!

One of these days (when I remember to do screenshots) I will totally do a tutorial on how to get from step 1 to step 2, I promise.

It was totally fly! LOL! I laughed hard at your step two comment! "Then I finished the picture!" Hah!

Great tutorial though. I'm going to have to definitely play with overlay layers!
