So yeah, this spawned from last night when I saw a little tiny spider skitter by on my wall, and I got REALLY spooked for some reason. I don't get it... How can something so small and practically harmless scare the pants off of me? It's just plain stupid.Art © Me, myself, and Moi

*shrug* Personally, I think it's something to do with the way their legs are arranged - it doesn't matter what position a spider lies in, it always looks like it's crouched ready to pounce.

That's the thing about phobias; they just don't make sense. In other words, I've felt like this much too often. Maybe spawned from seeing the shadow of a big banana spider through the window during thunderstorms.

No it isn't, that's a myth.
Fear of spiders is a relatively recent thing for our species, and concentrated in a few Western countries. Our hunter ancestors would never have survived if spiders scared them, and in cultures that still live close to nature - like people who live among tropical jungles - not only is nobody afraid of spiders, but they are an everyday food source.
Even the most venomous spider in the world is only 1% likely to kill you, unlike the most venomous snakes who can be fatal for sure without immediate treatment. There is basically no reason for us to have ever evolved an aversion to spiders; it's an abnormal, unnatural psychological quirk that unfortunately gets spread around by our culture.

I've gotten to the point of being able to ignore it, but I used to be absolutely paralyzed by anything with an exoskeleton. It still grates my nerves to hear the goddamn crickets in the back of my basement, but I've got a second reason for that.

Aw, really? Things with exoskeletons comprise over 90% of all known species on Earth. They are, in fact, the most "normal" of all animals and us vertebrates are like bizarre, inside-out giant monsters

My mom killed this small spider on the floor and all it's babies out of nowhere started running away in different directions and she started to squish them but I was freaking out o.o

I hate spiders.. Though I'm not as scared of them as I used to be 2 years ago, for example back then I would just freeze and start panicking, whilst now I just deal with them. You just gotta learn to deal with and control the phobia.
