Description So yeah, this spawned from last night when I saw a little tiny spider skitter by on my wall, and I got REALLY spooked for some reason. I don't get it... How can something so small and practically harmless scare the pants off of me? It's just plain stupid.

Because if it's a brown recluse and it bites you then you're fucked!

Not true. Recluse bites are grossly exaggerated; only people with bad immune systems or allergies usually react badly to them. Most recluse bites are just itchy, like a mosquito, and clear up by themselves.

Hey, at least it's totally unfounded in anyway and completely nonsensical, so that should make it easier to get over:
For one thing, the infamous Black Widow Spider is in fact nowhere near as harmful as most people would have you believe; those nasty photos you see on google images are the result of bacterial infection from when the wound isn't cleaned. Even the most truly venomous spiders (the Sydney Funnel Web comes to mind) aren't a significant risk to humans; no spider has venom powerful enough to cause any major lasting harm. As venom is costly to produce, a spider won't waste it on you even if it does bite, which won't happen unless you've backed it into a corner, and I'm sure you know how hard that is to do.
Not to mention that they eat mosquitoes and other insects that CAN hurt you. Plus, look how cute they are.
It's really easy and reliable to cure a phobia using the systematic approach, so why not try to do something about it?
Here's one that's a little less cute but very beautiful.

Think I will do something about it. After all, I'm sick of fretting over something that can't even really hurt me, nor has the intent to do so... Also, Jumping spiders are just adorable. ^^

Together, we can enforce a cure.
But seriously, good on ya. I've heard that it can work by exposing yourself to objects with even the slighteset resemblance (one of the examples given, as the article was specifically on arachnophobia, was a camera tripod) to whatever you're afraid of, but it sounds like you wouldn't need it anyhow.

Yeah, I'm terribly ineffective at catching them bacause I always think I'm going to crush them or render a leg or two useless.
I think the only thing I don't like about spiders is when they build their webs between the railings of my porch and I get a faceful of used spidersilk.

At least we have the advantage of getting a rolled up newspaper whereas they're only option is flight not fight.

Humans are actually genetically scared of spiders, it's something that's imprinted in our brains for reasons unknown to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

scythemantis In reply to ridleysghost [2013-03-14 14:14:55 +0000 UTC]

That is absolutely untrue. Fear of spiders does not exist in most countries. It's unique to a few highly developed Western civilizations where people are less exposed to nature as they mature. It's a recent, rare mental abnormality, but it's highly contagious anyway. Just seeing someone else overreact to a spider, when you're young enough, can program the fear into you.

Morggehan In reply to ridleysghost [2012-07-01 23:08:11 +0000 UTC]

i guess in prehistoric times our ancestors got bitten by poisonous spiders, and by time we learned to fear them... no matter how small.

if you only saw the game Sim Ant. in that game the spiders was so big that even looking at them... of course you were a tiny ant but hey.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

scythemantis In reply to Morggehan [2013-03-14 14:16:54 +0000 UTC]

Nope. There are almost no spiders venomous enough to be worth fearing (even the "deadliest" are only 1% likely to kill you) and fear of spiders does NOT exist in most of the world. It's rarest of all in the people closest to nature, who are exposed to them most often. Only people in highly developed countries, like America and Canada, seem to develop this unnatural terror.

To our ancestors, spiders were nothing but tasty snacks. In tropical countries, they still are; little children collect tarantulas off trees for their parents to cook up. Fear of them is totally abnormal

scythemantis In reply to UndeadMause [2013-03-14 14:13:32 +0000 UTC]

A spider would never do that. Spiders ONLY ever bite if they are FORCED...like if you grab one in your hand tightly, or it gets stuck in your shirt and its fangs are pushed into your skin.

Using their venom on you actually hurts them and can kill them, because they need that venom to eat insects. They are utterly terrified of us larger creatures, and think you want to eat them.

A spider will only ever run at you because it hopes it can dodge past you and escape. The only spider said to attack people on purpose is the Sydney Funnelweb, but that isn't proven

Basically the nurves sends signals to the brain showing that something small like a spider should be avoided because of its size, its the same from something big like a rampaging elephant, its easily to over come if you really try your best to over come the fear itself

Harmless? Oh please, they can be venomous but not as much as spiders like Black Widow or Tarantula.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scythemantis In reply to B-CactoArts [2013-03-14 14:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Uh.......Tarantula bites are no worse than bee stings. In fact, they're a lot less dangerous than bee stings. I thought everyone knew that?

And even a black widow bite is virtually never deadly. Only people with weak systems or severe allergies have anything to fear from their venom, and even then, death is incredibly rare. The last person to die of a widow bite was over 20 years ago. Only two or three other spiders known to man are even as toxic as the widow, and all the rest are almost totally harmless.

Even most brown recluse bites are just itchy, like a mosquito bite, and then go away.

Some food for thought:

From what I understand, the most venomous spider in the world is NOT the Black Widow, technically, but the Daddy Longlegs. However, the fangs of a Daddy Longlegs are simply too small to puncture human skin.

On the other hand, there are spiders like the Redback, which has the most painful non-lethal spiderbite known to man. Non-lethal, but it hurts like a Motherf**ker.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Orima-Kazooie In reply to SilverKazeNinja [2012-07-01 23:27:52 +0000 UTC]

This is all wrong. Well, the Daddy Long Legs part is; the Harvestman is not venomous in anyway, is fully capable of chewing its own food, and isn't even a spider. It is technically true that the Black Widow is not the most venomous spider, and is in fact nowhere near as harmful as most people would have you believe; those nasty photos you see on google images are the result of bacterial infection from when the wound isn't cleaned. Even the most truly venomous spiders (the Sydney Funnel Web comes to mind) aren't a significant risk to humans; no spider has venom powerful enough to cause any major lasting harm. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Orima-Kazooie In reply to SilverKazeNinja [2012-07-02 00:17:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid I wouldn't know, and I'd imagine that unfortunately if you tried to search for it you'd get more of the same whether it's true or due to how misinformation can spread. That said, however, there are quite a few animals with really painful but fairly harmless bites or stings, so it doesn't sound too unreasonable in theory. But remember that a painful reaction would likely be caused by a venom, so it'd be just as rare even if it is painful.
But, hey, now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
