Favorite Disney Character Challenge - #04: Jim Crow from Dumbo (1941).

Sort of a controversial character nowadays, especially with a name like “Jim Crow”, but he is truly one of the more redeeming characters in Dumbo. Besides Timothy and Mrs. Jumbo, Jim Crow and his gang are the only other people who are kind to poor little Dumbo. Jim is the one that gives Timothy and Dumbo the “magic feather”, the placebo that gives Dumbo the confidence to fly. He’s a fun-loving and free-spirited character, always in control, and his song, “When I See an Elephant Fly”, is one of the highlights of the film.

Coincidently, Jim Crow has two things in common with one of my previous Disney character challenges. His voice was provided by the same person who gave Jiminy Cricket his voice, Cliff Edwards. And like Jiminy, he was designed and animated by the same animator, Ward Kimball!

And Jim Crow probably has my favorite line of dialogue in any Disney movie:“You wanna make the elephant fly, don’t ya? Well, you gotta use a lot of ‘chology, you know, PSY-chology!”. Always makes me crack up.
