This is really cool, I love seeing people creaking into photobashing, I am still learning myself...

Is the background a photo? I am guessing you used that rock wall and painted on the snow/effects and then blurred out a real photo in the far background? I am curious how different artists achieve their results.

At any rate, lovely work, I hope you pursue more like this!

Thanks man! Photo-bashing was just a month long experiment for me. Personally I'm not too into photo-bashing I've never considered it real painting, I just wanted to try it, learn it, master as much as possible, take what I could from it and move on. And honestly I did learn alot from just a month of doing it.

The background is made from 5 different photos: Snow, an apartment block, a rock wall, trees and broken wood. The soldier in the foreground is about 50% painted. Which is cheating I know, but making a painting WITHOUT painting is blasphemy to me.

Thanks again. I might one day if I feel like I can learn more from it.

I think there are plenty of artists out there that paint all oveer the photos they bash, in fact I know of a couple that repaint their entire image by the time they finish. I can see where you call it cheating, many people feel this way, but as you said, learning the technique to advance your repertoire of skills cant be a bad thing!

Yeah, getting better at painting is hard. So artists tend to do whatever it takes to get better.

My biggest problem is time. I would love to spend more time drawing and painting and furthering my skills, but alas, between family and my long hours at work, and other hobbies there is such little time to invest. I hope to rectify this issue somehow in the future, but thus far I just do what I can when I can, and unfortunately this results in slow updates.

I feel the same way too, like 24 hours a day isn't enough right?
I myself have two other things going at the same time right now other than my career lol.

I am quite jealous of the well known names around here who have the chance to spend all their time painting and updating. Living off of Patreon and what not.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about fame and fortune and "extra time" to do my own stuff, because "extra time' is always abused and if you're smart with what time you have you can always make time to do what you love to do, and as for fame and money ... those don't mean a thing if you can't take it with you to your grave one day. Man, I just want to draw till the day I die HAHA!

I've got a job in the games industry so I guess I'm lucky in a way, I get to draw for a living. But in the past my friends and I had to push each other to practice 90 - 120 hours a week for a long time to land jobs like the one I got, with no income, barely any sleep, no girlfriend, no breaks bla bla bla. But IMO passion and sacrifice always pay off, competitive industries only take the best 'bang for their buck' they can find, and in order to be that, you need to KNOW you're damn good at what you do despite how many favs you get on DeviantArt and how many likes on Facebook.

So don't waste your time being jealous or wishing upon a star. Just keep writing and drawing and whatever else, cause I believe that if you're passionate enough and if you improve by working hard enough, people will see that and they'll appreciate that and when you talk to people who see you that way, opportunities will come. I f**king guarantee it.

Oh I agree for sure, I am not so jealous of their fame, just that they can live off drawing and therefore, keep drawing all the time. You are right though, it is more about making the time to do whats important. Really Id be happy with followers who comment and enjoy my work (same goes for my book someday)  Id rather get feedback than hundreds of favorites.

That is definitely true, I am going to try harder this year to focus on putting more practice and work out. I am always afraid things arent "good enough", they dont meet my expectations or maybe what I think other peoples expectations are so I have 20 something paintings that are "WIP" because I just dont know when they are finished enough to satisfy. I am still learning and with each new technique I learn I want to upgrade my work so I kinda hurt myself in that sense, att least with painting/drawing on here. I was far more productive just putting out my line art lol!

I admit, getting to draw everyday is a blast. But everyone I know who gets to draw for a living has earned the right to do so through near inhuman effort, ofcourse there is that someone who earns $25'000 a month on Patreon drawing really bad (but funny) comics but she's one of a kind, a glitch in the system. Like the potato salad guy over at kickstarter.

Agreed. Favs don't mean much if you don't get constructive criticism.

Oh yea, working out is very important, it helps keep you focused and productive, even if you're an over-worked idiot like me and hit the home gym at midnight. Personally I find strength building programs are better for keeping your mind fresh than cardio but thats probably just me.

Don't try to meet other people's expectations, from my experience that is an act of futility you will never meet it because it's all in your mind. No matter how good or bad you are at art, there will always be people who hate your work and people who love your work. Just draw because you love to draw, end of story. I'm sure all great masters still alive today like Syd Mead, Ian Mcque or Juanjo Guarido will say the same thing ... there is nobody to impress, just draw because you want to.

That is true, I guess I wouldn't know how it would be for me til I tried it and depended on it for a living, which is impossible as it were right now. Pharmacy may not be what I wanted to do, but at least it pays decently. I suppose that depending on commissions and not knowing where the next job will come from can be stressful and ruin some of the fun of drawing as a living as well.

Haha, working out is important, but I meant putting work out (producing art). At any rate, ssince you brought it up, I find working out to be a benefit of its own as well and incidentally I agree with you on strength training, cardio just isnt for me, I do it only occasionally to remind my body sometimes it will need to to these things lol. I took a year off from working out as I was a bit burnt out on it, alas I lost many of my gains because of my fusion powered metabolism that burns away everything (I shouldn't complain though, better that than the opposite!)

You are right, the problem is my own expectations, I seem to get hung up on letting a work be "done" because I always think, well now I can use this new trick I learned and this new technique I saw, now I have to redo this part or do this differently, etc etc. I am my own worst critic because I always think I can do better (which isnt always true). I suppose it is a good thing to have that sort of confidence in myself, but at teh same time it keeps me from getting anything done art wise...lol

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-01-15 07:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Nah. Anything possible when you put time and effort into it. But from a financial and getting contacts stand point you'll have it slightly easier than me, most of the very famous artists from all over world who can give you tips on how to start out are already in America. And as for stress when drawing, yes, drawing can be a b*tch sometimes especially when deadlines and commissions are involved but I can't stay angry at something I love so much.

Lol! A slight miscommunication, my metabolism is quite the opposite, I get fat just by drinking water! But somehow I can also make gains fast. Yea working out everyday is very hard, I agree, but at the same time its such a joy to feel the burn after a chest day isn't it?

Learning new techniques all the time is a good thing! From my experience I recommend doing alot of pieces dedicated to that new technique you're trying to learn, whether you finish those paintings or not it doesn't matter but when you feel comfortable enough, you should do a painting to finish it all off, IMO this painting must be finished and try to ignore your instinct to not finish it, so you can see for certain how much you've improved over the course of your training.

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-01-17 21:17:43 +0000 UTC]

At the moment, you still have the upper hand because you actually are doing this, where as I am not lol. Perhaps being in America has some advantages, but from the artists I watch, it is really more about exposure than anything. If Michael Lim's stuff starts to show up all over the net, and is easily accessible, I think it isi only a matter of time til you are noticed. Companies are always sscouting for new ideas and styles, and probability says somoeone will be looking for your style.

Just like a lot of the internet famous artists on here, if you have your art in multiple places, you are more likely to be seen by someone, and eventually one of those people will be looking to hire, so I dont think you being a Singaporean will impact that in any way. Perhaps as far as being hired from wiithin your own country it could, but outside on the internet, it is international territory and most design firms could care less where the artist is from, if at all. As long as you can bring something to the table that they want!

Yes, I really do need to get back to focusing on that, staying with something til it is learned well enough I dont have to keep reminding myself with tutorials and such...I hope I can do some of that this year and produce more, and better quality work...

Sorry for the late reply, I've been having some serious carpal tunnel issues lately.

You do have a point I do have some exposure in the industry. But you'll be amazed how much faster it is in the US, a friend of mine when to America and came home with as much exposure and money after participating for 3 days at a convention as he did here in a year! Literately! It was so amazing how many people were willing to give him jobs and pay for his services despite having next to no idea who he was. They just thought his art was great (and indeed it is ) and bought it and give him name cards.

Indeed it is possible to get famous on the internet, but from what I realized, getting famous from galleries and conventions takes skill, getting famous on the internet takes luck. But who knows! I might just get lucky one of these days! And I won't have to worry about money again.

I wish you the best of luck on that! Put your heart into it and you'll get there...

I recently spoke to some artists at the Tennessee Comic Con and one in particular was encouraging me to sign up to the conventions to promote work, he said he achieved lots of followers and fans from doing conventions. I may consider it in the future...

As to internet fame, well, maybe in time...lol

Thanks! Hopefully so.

Those artists do have a point, they know they're lucky to be in America and how much easier it is to get exposure as an artist, they know probably because they have artist friends outside of America. In my opinion, I'd say save up some money, go get a few of your drawing buddies, rent a both and participate in Comic Con at least once, it'll be fun, believe me! And if you didn't like it (which is very unlikely) at least you can say you tried. Having Comic Con or Pax or whatever IN THE SAME COUNTRY must be amazing!

Internet fame will come with patience and skill, don't worry just keep drawing and writing and post. It'll come, I think...

I do plan on it at some point. Currently I have only been attending to promote my friends game and go as a consumer. I am in the process though of joining the 501st so I can troop at events (cool!) and someday hope to try an art booth as well.

It is true they are all here: Comic Con, Pax, E3, Dragoncon, Templecon, Bluescon etc etc HOWEVER dont forget that America is HUGE! I havent travelled to very many farther away ones! I am on the mid-eastern coast (Tennessee) so I have decent access to many, but it is still hard to travel further away and get off work pay for rooms etc...

Thanks for encouragement, I do hope so!

Yea! Thats the spirit!

I'm studying in Australia right now, where everything is cheaper THANK GOODNESS. I learnt they have Pax and Comic Con here I'm definitely not missing those! Yea you're right about taking time of work to go to cons and such, but remember you are in America going to these event will take you several hours, think about the people outside America who want to see TempleCon and BluesCon and DragonCon I have to travel halfway round the PLANET to see those.

Your welcome!
