Description Get ready for a butt-load of reading.

This is the first of many many many paintings and concept art for a home-made tabletop RPG I'm making.

The world I've created is our world about 180+++ years in the future. A post-post apocalyptic future. Where all the civilizations of world have fallen but have since been rebuilt in a new and unrecognizable Earth ravaged by spliced genetic mutants, technology run amok, magic and monsters.

---------------------

In the year 2050, decades before the game campaign starts our world was ravaged by war and terrorism. The world's governments had prepared for World War III. The riches countries pooled their resources to genetically alter the human race in fear that we fragile humans would not survive the predicted world war. In the end splicing people eventually resulted in our race splitting into three different 'post-human species': The original humans, adaptable and versatile, the Yaguaret spliced cat-men, unbelievably fast and inhumanly flexible built to thrive in the wild should civilization fall and the Khepri, strong, naturally armored insect-men built to crush their enemies. The splicing project was a success, if one species of post-human one died off, there would still be two more to carry on the human legacy.

However, World War III never came, instead something far worse happened.

A collision of worlds, ours: Earth, a world of tech and science and another earth from a parallel universe: Eldarath, a world of magic and mysticism. Enormous portals tearing through space and time opened up all though out our troubled world, spewing forth strange beasts, beings and 'Mana' a deadly, intangible fifth state of matter. Exposure to 'mana' can kill any non-magical creature in mere hours. Within months Mana had 'terraformed' pockets of our world, entire cities were left empty or lifeless and what cities left standing were fighting for territory and resources against the magical beings and against each other.

As resource began to thin out, the war for our world eventually turned two-fold when the three post human races turned on one another. And eventually factions were formed. Forged by fear or hate.

All races and factions are as follows:

---------------------

RACES-------------

Earth races -------
- Humans: Average, everyday man or woman. Diverse, intelligent (mostly), adaptable and quick witted, humans are the most dominant race in the world...for now.

- Khepri: They are humanoid insects created by a countless genetic experiments from the Chimera Project of the 2050s combining all kinds of insect DNA and a human genome and, distilled into a serum for infusion. The end result was a serum that could turn an ordinary human into an insect like post-human super soldier. unbelievably strong and can almost never grow ill or be poisoned.

- Yaguaret: Also a part of the Chimera Initiative, the Yaguaret are humanoid felines created by combining feline DNA strands into the human genome, distilled into a special serum. The process splices a subject into a feline post-human, equipped with dexterity, flexibility and senses far beyond human potential. The process is also capable of curing any illness no matter how deadly or incurable, however this is a one time affair.

- Fiends: Genetic freaks. Born from non magical beings receiving more than deadly doses of mana, fiends are born when a being of any of the earth races dies in a place saturated with mana. Their corpses, empowered by mana, are raised to life again, retaining their intelligence but none of their memories from before death, and turned into a misshapen form of their former selves. Shunned by most factions for their ugliness.

Eldarath Races ---
-Fay (elves): Human-like only in silhouette, the Elves have grooved golden, rocky skin as smooth as the finest polished marble, titanium blond hair and eyes that seems to glow in the dark alittle. They are the fairest and shapliest of all the races, elegance and grace, and a particular knack for amazing craftsmanship. Elves can easily change their form to walk amoung the other races unmolested.

Drakaaren: Bipedal dragons, who possess amazing intellect and magical ability. Being very tall and erogant, they dress as richly as possible at any given moment and they see themselves in a higher esteem to everyone around them and that they alone have the right by birth to take on (in their own eyes) the noblest of tasks.

Dryad: Beings seemingly made entirely of vines and branches, unlike all the other races Dryad are immortal, only sickness and fire can kill them, if they 'die' by a hail of bullets or by being sliced up to pieces, they simply sleep for a century or two and then they wake up again good as new. They are mostly reclusive and shy by nature, usually don't take sides.

FACTIONS---------

- UHDF (United Human Defense Front): A human only faction, totalitarian and elitist, they believe that Humans are the only ones worthy of being the dominant race on earth. And everyone else must die whether they are from Earth or Eldarath. They're the most technologically advanced of all the factions and thus the most dominant.

- The Crusaders: A faction started by but not limited to Humans. They practices racial tolerance, and maintain an ethical (please and thank you) way of life, recruiting the strong to defend the weak. Though The Crusaders don't much care for the magical races their code of racial tolerance forces them to not take action against the resource guzzling magical races since they're also just trying to survive in this post-post apocalyptic world.

- Cizin: A Yaguaret (spliced cat-people) only faction, its values are based around narcissism, blood magic and hatred for the other races. They believe themselves superior to EVERYONE who isn't feline on a genetic level. The people of Cizin live life like the ancient Romans did, enjoying blood sport, slavery and debauchery.

- Apparatus Maleficis: Meaning machine to magic in Latin. An earth race only faction, meaning Humans, Khepri and Yaguarets. They forsake technology entirely and devolt their entire lives to studying and understanding magic, how to live with mana and is home to some of the most powerful earth race wizards in the world selfishly keeping their findings for themselves.

- Ixchel: A faction made by but not limited to Yaguaret, and unlike their violent brethren in Cizin, these cat-folk are more peaceful and accepting, not forgetting how they came to be, that Humans, Yaguaret and Khepri were once one race, they aim to live peacefully among the other races, including the magic races.

- Arthropod: A Khepri only faction and the most neutral of all the factions, they want nothing to do with the bickering of other factions. Just let them do their own thing. The Khepri have such strong stomachs they can live their entire lives eating nothing but other people's garbage...so they do. They are probably the happiest people in the world since they're not involved in the faction war and require next to no resources to survive.

- Pot Prednikov: A Fey(Elves) and Dryad(Plant-people) faction of the magic peoples, they were thrusted out of their ancient ways as Eldarath and Earth merged together. Pot Prednikov means 'Path of the Ancients' they strive to keep the sacred culture of their ancestors alive in a strange new world where magic and technology exist side by side.

- Drakaraia: A Drakaaren only faction bent on the destruction of all things technology and every blasphemer who uses it. They believe that tech is a curse on all magic-kind and that they are the chosen ones to purify this world and make it 'whole' again.

I have read and understood everything, and i would want to be in the Apparatus Maleficis Faction. I love the art as well!!!

I love how you created your own little world inside your head. How long have you been thinking about all of this stuff?

So much detail! Looks like you spent a lot of time on this one! Love all the little additions here and there, very chock full of intricacies.

And much info to be had in your word block! Sounds like youve been thinking about this a while!

Thanks! Oh man I'm so glad you like it! This has been my passion project for about a year and a half now! I have only just started doing the art but I've got 100+ sheets in excel full of info about the universe and how the game systems will work, in fact, I just beta tested the game last month with my friends, its actually fun!! So that word block is just 0.0001% of what I have! Stay tuned for more!

I can fully appreciate the hard work that goes into building a universe, having had to do so (and still continue) doing my own for my books. It takes lots of notes and hard work butt it is very fun as well. I am glad to see you so excited about your project, it is important that it makes you feel so pleased! I have been working on my own universe for a decade or so, and it still is enjoyable for me!

Whoa a decade?! I was still struggling to draw stick figures back then. LOL. I hope I'll be able to publish my game within a decade haha.
I agree enthusiasm plays a huge role when it comes to the quality of your end product.

I didnt have an idea of what I wanted to do back then, but yes, eventually random characters and ideas started coming together into one cohesive existence, and because I had no way to present my materials to the public in the form of a series like Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc, I decided the most accesiible way for me to begin would be books, and try to start like A song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, Hunger Games and Divergent style books got started, write a book, gain followers, go from there.

We shall see if that formula idea succeeds...

Yeah , the way my game world became the way it is was through evolution as well, over the past one and a half years of gathering references and other materials.

I'm pretty sure it does, most of the "brutally honest" friends I asked to critique my world say its still alittle empty but it's a unique and fun world to roleplay in. But even if no one liked the world I'd still be doing it anyways, cause I'm doing it for me most of all, the more content I put into the world the more I fall in love with it.

As you keep at it though, the emptiness will become more full, you have to lay a skeleton before you can add the meat and details on top, it can only grow as you continue working at it and hopefully you can use the feedback from your players and combine that with your direction to shape it into something grander.

You know there are a lot of people who love RPG stuff, you may want to consider going at it hardcore and trying to do a kickstarter or similar!

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-01-05 12:08:02 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree, I'll stick to it filling the game out with more content.

I think kick starter is an excellent idea, I will do that, I've been planning to for sometime now.

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-01-06 02:41:22 +0000 UTC]

I have known a few people to do them, one is a very close friend. If you want any advice from his experiences let me know and I can ask. I know he learned a lot from it! I definitely think that if you dont want to use the universe you created yourself, you should try and profit off of it at least by making an rpg type thing, they are so popular and those hardcore gamers out there eat up new environments and universes!

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-01-06 05:15:07 +0000 UTC]

My older brother did kickstarter and indiegogo campaigns before, I helped him with those and its not easy, there's a lot of preparation involved but still I can't wait to do one of my own!

I do plan on using the IP I created for kickstarter campaigns and you're absolutely right, the hardcore players are my target audience, which is why I've tailored the character creation portion of the game to allow for maximum customization, seasoned role-players will love it! But newbies will probably be a little overwhelmed by the character creation process.

I plan on doing multiple kickstarter campaigns, one for the actually game, one for the online comic I'm working on based in the game world, and I'l probably have more campaigns for any other plans I have. But I won't have more than one campaign for each project. Maybe I'll try patreon too! But we'll see about that one...

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-01-10 23:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Correct there!

You could always make it so that it has a more user friendly "easy" version, but if the more hardcore players wanted too, it could be expanded and become more in depth as well, as far as the creation aspects were concerned.

Doing multiple KS is a good way to gauge interest and also get repeat business, especially if you do different settings and expansion ideas etc. Patreon is probably a little harder to pull off for an rpg thing, unless you are posting characters fairly often like one guy I watch, but it could be done I spose. The comic idea would work, but you would need to gauge interest before making that a primary income, but lots of artists do that on Patreon and seem to make it just fine.

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-01-15 03:31:19 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, I like your idea of an easy and hardcore version I'll definitely be taking that in to consideration!

Yeap, doing a KS campaign is pretty intimidating, but you're right I need to gauge how interested my targeted audience is. I could do character art, but thats not what I'm interested in, I've always found that to be a little shallow, like they've got dozens of characters with faces and poses and expressions, but they're depicted only in that moment with no back story. And plus that market is kinda saturated, with artists twice as experienced as myself. I think I'll stick to the RPG thing haha!

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-01-17 21:11:11 +0000 UTC]

I think that would be a good way to make your product accessible by beginners and veterans alike, and thereby make it more sell worthy.

Character art  may not be your forte, that is just something that regularly occurs in those type books so that is what came to mind, but if you are more interested in the environments and setting you could certainly focus more efforts into that. Perhaps you could hire out a character designer if you ever felt the need, or do a separate kick starter supplemental (or add on/bonus goal unlock) for those interested.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-02-14 08:09:17 +0000 UTC]

I've been working on that since you told me, I think its a really good idea!

Yeah, characters are the worst, but there are always ways to get a better end product faster and easier, I just gotta put my brain to it for a bit. I'm doing the environment and character art pieces at the same time cause I know once I start pure environment stuff I will NEVER get started on characters haha! Hire a character artist eh? Nah, I dont think so, I would much rather hire a writer or a marketer, someone I know for a fact would be able to do a much, much better job than me, rather than hiring someone to do something I can do just as well.

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-02-20 21:34:12 +0000 UTC]

Good! Hope you have success with it. I am sure you will keep everyone updated.

I quite enjoy character design myself, while you said you enjoy more of the environment aspect. I often have ideas for environments but quite honestly little practice with them, I should and mean to one day put that on my agenda of things to learn... Maybe do some tutorials and classes on them. At any rate I understand your qualms hiring someone to do something you can do yourself, but in the long run if it would improve your material and you didnt want to do them yourself, it is an option at least.

Writing is fun as well, coming from me writing my own universe I can fully appreciate that bit as well, but it is tricky sometimes, especially hiring outside help...

Oh, absolutely 100%! For now I'm just keeping people entertained by posting artwork, but eventually when this deviantArt account reaches 1.5K to 2K watchers, I will set up a website that will allow you to create your character and help you understand the process of creating a character.

Oh don't get me wrong I love character 'design', it character illustration that kills me haha! I always panic a little inside when I'm told to make my character from the design sheet as 'photo-real' as possible. Yeesh!
You have a point, hiring other artists will help me in the long run, but the short term plan has to cater for a lack of funding and if doing the art on my own will save money, I'll have to do it LOL. Long term on the other hand, well thats a different story, we'll see how things play out.

I totally know what you mean, organizing things for them to do, handing out design sheets, lore and design specs. So far, I've been fortunate, I like to surround myself with very passionate people who come from different backgrounds and have different disciplines. They volunteer to help me as and when they have free time with artwork, writing, world building or to just beta test the latest build. Of course they don't do much work but every little bit helps!

Hitting that many watchers would be crazy. I havent hit 150 yet but am close, even that is crazy to me! Those other ideas sound like cool plans for your future setup!

I know what you mean, I should practice daily so I could eventually do that sorta stuff, but I dont so I end up needing reference for poses and what not. One day at a time I guess!

Yes, exactly what you said lol. Friend of mine has been hard at work for two years now trying to make good on his writing for a Kickstarter Art book, it is hard work and even simple things like layout and so forth is time consuming and requires much editing!

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-03-06 10:55:34 +0000 UTC]

I know right!? It would be amazing! I hope I get there one day too! I'm at 420 no where near 1k either haha! Yea! and I am planning to learn programming someday soon too.

You've got the right idea, practicing to drawing realistically is no different from practicing to play the guitar or to do the splits or whatever, you gotta do it Every. Single. Day till you get it. And if you take it one day at a time, make drawing/painting a part of your daily routine, enjoy the journey and don't think about the destination. You'll get there before you know it.

Oh yea, I know how he feels, I am currently trying to write the rule book for my game. And turning 27 spreadsheet tabs into a book is hard! I always knew it was gonna be hard but not this hard! haha! And to make things worse I'm going back to school, so I'll have classes, homework and a game to make... thats alot of work...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-03-10 07:23:19 +0000 UTC]

I really cant even imagine 420! lol

It's true, if I only had the time! My day job eats so much of...well, my day! When I get off work its feed animals, change clothes, meet with my trainer/work out (preferably a nap) and then dinner and a few hours free time before bed (which I usually spend with my family ofc) Hopefully I can squeeze it in there sometime!

I feel you on the scheduling! (As mentioned above) I wish we had more time during our days! One of my great fears is that I wont get done as much as I want, which seems to be true alas.

I feel you man, I know what it like to have way too much to do and everything needs to be cramped into one day, but even if you can make an extra 20 minutes a day to draw, I guess it's better nothing!

You and me both man ... 24 hours is too little!
