Description
I'm not good with explaining things, so, eh... I'll just give the summary...Everything's modeled in 3dsmax, textures in photoshop, yada yada... They're obvious...
In DBPro (engine) the mesh is positioned and posed with the textures applied to it.
Textures are then converted into the desired colors I want using HLSL.
4-5 cameras are then rendered to get the necessary images needed for image composition.
It uses both the normals and the distance/depth to generate the inks. (via HLSL too) The 2nd normal render is required to create the wiggly/distorted look on the inks...
Everything is finally combined into a single image to be shown in the screen.
(The biggest surprise here is that all of these processes are being done in milliseconds... Oh, technology...)
So, the answer of my recent poll [link] is: "Everything's 3D"
Thank you for answering my poll! My aim here is to make a 3d render look questionable whether it's hand drawn or not... Though, maybe it looks 2d at still image... The hard part is to make a 3d animation look 2d...
Softwares:
Photoshop
3dsmax
DarkBASIC Professional
DarkShader
Notepad?

Hey, Love all your works, had a previous account that constantly stalks your DA. A question if you have time to answer, i am using maya at the moment, for my animation major course. Do you know any shader similar to that may generate these, soft looking shadow without using ambient occlusion? So that it can be used like one of your games, without taking up more spaces or time to render for animation.
I tried using white lambert and rendering it as a shadow passes though, the result is quite good although i takes more time, and turning on depth map shadow makes it looks rather pixely so it's not casting any shadow on the ground. I am curious as how would you approach this subject matter. Sincerely, alex.

I know it's in the description and all, but could you break the process down a bit more for idiots such as myself? I would eventually like to create this same effect for models for a future project I have. Looks awesome, by the way.

This is great stuff, and it actually taught me something too.
Thanks for putting it on.

Did you use 3Dsmax for the bone structure only, or also the mesh?
THIS IS CRAZY!
Cuz I'll be able to do this too when I graduate.
OH GOD.

i could fave it million times and it'd not be enough.
This is made of awesomeness! It's amazing how you mix things here lol (i'd never thought someone would use HLSL and 3D rendering to do 2D artwork lol )

it's cool and all, but what I want to know is why it's all been done in 3d and not just done in 2d?

The awesomeness is baffling.
My, that's awesome. I want to be able to do that.

Wow! I totally poll'd 2D, I'd never have known!!
I personally prefer the look of camera 2 (engine render)

...that was way too complicated for me to comprehend most of it.
XD
the thing i got was "3D to look not-so-3D"

Kool Although I find that workflow kind of time consuming (due to the multiple camera renders..) Why didn't you just use the finalToon shader?

So I guess that makes me half right then? I mean, I did think it was half and half. Anyway, I really dug the effects you did in this picture!

That is ALOT of work for a model & image. I gotta ask, how'd you make the biped & bones?
