Traveling and expedition. The primary way that many of us on this planet discover new things about this blue planet that we call home. As humans we toil over finding newer discoveries and locating unknown areas throughout the universe, hoping to seek out more answers about what makes it tick, yet we have to remember that there are countless mysteries and species that inhabit the very planet beneath our feet. Although the technology that accompanies us on our treks has changed drastically and the various knowledge that we are able to comprehend and record has greatly increased, the simple love and desire of seeking out new and interesting things as well as the idea of finding something truly significant and world changing is more than enough fuel to pack up and move out into the unknown. Its very likely that these practices will continue as they are in the near and distant future.Survey team, drawn by *mikemars, gives us his own personal look into a surveying team for an archeological expedition as they have a look into a possibly dangerous location to investigate.

A good use of foliage was a good way to sculpt the overall design of the environment. Not to mention they really give the massive structure a good feeling age and deterioration. The clouds show a surprising level of detail and can almost be imagined to be moving across the sky above the landscape as if it too is surveying the area curiously. The addition of the clouds shadowing over certain parts of the landscape give a better display of the artist's attention to detail and knowledgeable use of natural elements to better emphasize the atmospheric tension upon the landscape.

The survey team members as they stand before their destination almost makes you wonder what could be going through their minds as they view the landscape before them. The thick clouds ominously collecting above their heads as they begin to cover the landscape above them, darkening the landscape around them, as if its the planet's way of telling the two unwary travelers that the land that they are stepping upon could be viewed by others as hallowed ground. They stand before the land with a tenseness in their stance as if they too are beginning to feel the isolated dangers hidden beneath the jagged ruins scattered about the landscape. Truly, it creates a story that one would love to see as it progressed, watching the travelers explore the ruins to see what treasures...and horrors lurk beneath their cloud-shadowed veils.

The picture definitely shows promise, however could use a bit of refinement to make this gem shine. For instance, much of the foliage doesn't really stand out that well and could do with a bit of detailing. Instead they appear flat, as if they were draped over the ground like a blanket. The same could be said for the leaves in the trees; a bit of textural refinement and detailing could really do this piece some justice. The same could be said for some of the monuments in the background. Do not be afraid to go that extra mile and add that bit of detail that would make them just as engrossing to the eye as the foreground elements.

With a rather interesting concept behind it, and such promising elements in the piece, there is no doubt that this piece is worth putting into your favorites. Good work. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" title="Clap"/>

this is an amazing crit and i am very gratefull for it. i did have some trouble painting in the foliage and you saw that very clearly. i totally agree btw about the background architecture too. i think i wanted to move on and thats why i left them as they are. your crit may inspire me to try to solve my foliage problem and background arch in the future by returning to the piece. the interpretation of the story was wonderfully written as well and helps me see some things i hadnt seen before from this painting. bravo! and thankyou!

Quite an excellent depiction of another land and a survey team hoping to uncover its mysteries. Good work.
