Description
[Update] Since people keep asking "why not use comic sans?", its universally known as a font that mainly amateurs use. (The image of home made flyers comes to mind) It's the Crocs of the design world, and if you want to be taken more seriously, it is advised to use a different font.As promised! This is how I letter my work. Hope this is helpful to someone!

I would not have thought to warp the elliptical speech bubbles to make them look less mechanical, but that is a great tip. In a page where everything has that organic, hand done feel the perfect geometry stands out as just slightly wrong. That subtle touch of the imperfect, for lack of a better word, really makes a difference.

it always bothered me when you can SEE something was made in photoshop using a specific tool. XD this warp thing is something I have seen western comics use a lot.

Good effects are invisible, so to speak. You shouldn't notice the effect, you should just notice the great story.

When I make a bubble, I first use the ellipse tool, then I make a tail with the pen tool (better than drawing it by hand imo).
You can then combine the two pathes by clicking on shift + a and "combine".
I put all the filling, striking, erasing the path, etc... in an "action" so I only have to push on one button to do everything

Very helpful, thank you. I've been putting comic pages together for years and I still find the lettering tricky.

Thank you so much for this! But one question...Is there a way to put text into Sai? Or is it only possible through Photoshop?

Could you also do a tutorial on how to make a comic page? Like from the first sketching step on paper and inking it (on paper) to scanning it in on the computer and inking it in there. That would help me a lot.

Comic Sans is design-wise simply a bit clumsy and amateurish. I don't hate it, but people who work in design or publishing most definitely will recognise it.It doesn't make a good impression.

Really helpful! And I agree about the Japanese sound effects...when I see them in an originally English-language comic, it's really confusing

I am japanese, and so far I have never seen it done right.... XD; Not only is it awkwardly written, but often very wrong too. :C
Glad you find this useful!

I'll probably end up using Japanese sound effects, not because I claim to be fluent in Japanese but just the comic I'm looking at doing is meant to be a parody of manga in general. Great stuff though thanks for the advise!

mikiko-art In reply to prepare4drop [2013-12-16 16:55:23 +0000 UTC]
as a parody, mistakes certainly would add to the comedic effect. XD
no problem, happy to help.
