Description
This was taken at a funeral for another K-9 officer. While focusing my camera, I just happened upon Sgt. McIntosh paying respects to his fallen K-9 partner.Related content

Yes, this K-9 officer died of old age. The one who's funeral I was attending at the time that I was taking this photo, he died from something called "bloat." If you're not familiar with that, it's where their intestines get twisted after they've been having a bad attack of indigestion, or something similar to that. I'm probably not explaining it properly, but, it's as close as I can get without knowing all the proper terminology. He tried his best to get him to the vet...went lights and sirens all the way, but, it was just too late. It was such a sad funeral. The entire town, almost, showed up for it. I was very impressed by the turnout, and also the funeral, itself. Top Notch!
Thank you for the comment and the

Old age I think is the best way to go Yes, I am familiar with bloat. That's sad
It's nice to hear they really cared for him though, with pretty much everyone showing up and a funeral.
No problem, very touching

I'm a former Bike Patrol Officer. This K-9 Officer was shown in the photo died of natural causes. He was very old. But, the one who's funeral I was attending, died of an illness called "bloat" common in large dogs, where their bellies fill up with gas and their intestines get twisted. A true life threatening emergency needing immediate attention. I may not have it quite correct, but, that's what I've been told about the illness. I know the officer tried his best to get the dog to the vet, going lights and sirens with an escort, even, all the way to the vet's office, but, it was no use. There just was not enough time.
Thanks for your comments and the I'm very honored!

Thank you! That's quite an honor!
I worked for a private police department within a Children's Hospital.I was a bike patrol Sergeant, but, also worked interior duties, as well. It was a very large facility, so, we had our own little "city within our campus boundaries." I had to take a medical disability a few years ago, so, I am no longer with the department.

Well, to be quite honest, I am just now getting to see a lot of the comments that were left. I had a very serious family emergency during the time that this was given a DD, and I didn't stay up with my messages very well, but, now that I'm going over them, I'm not really liking a conversation that seemed to have cropped up on here...

Oh really? I'm sorry about your serious family emergency and I hope that all is well on that score. I did not read all of the comments, of course. Just the very beginning. I'm always amazed at how well people can express themselves and I feel very inadequate at being able to say all that a photo says to me. This truly did deserve a DD. I've never had that privilege yet and it may never come. We will see. But I HAD to write something on that one and what you said back spoke volumes to me! I thank you for that!

Yeah, my mom had a near fatal medical mishap this past August from a procedure that she wasn't even necessary to begin with. She's still not well from it, and the aftermath of it all is still ongoing. The horrible part of it is, the little minor problem that started it all has yet to be fixed, but, now, they've got her so UNhealthy that that problem can't even be addressed! But, I won't bore you with all of that, I'll just let you know that it has been 7 months of pure Hell, but, the one good thing that has come out of it, is my mom and I have grown really close from this experience.
I never thought I'd ever get a DD, either. I was extremely shocked to get that one! And, especially to get it on the very day that I brought her home from the hospital! That was so cool! But, as I was going over the last of the comments last night, and was reading how those guys were having their own little battle on my page....I was getting kinda bent outta shape about it! They were getting down right rude. I shouldn't say "they," one guy in particular was being a real jerk. But...It's been months ago, now. I don't know if complaining to dA's Admin. would do any good or not. I mean, why carry on an argument on MY page?? I realize they were arguing over MY photo, but...geez! Grow up, BOYS!

It was an amazing and very emotional event. Something I will never forget, and was honored to be a part of. It was wonderful how the whole community came together to support the officer who lost his K-9 partner. I was truly touched. There were so many tears for this dog...you just would not have believed it! I was really moved beyond belief!
Thank you for the comment and the . I really appreciate it.

YEAH!
How about that? I didn't even notice it, until a day or two afterward, because of all the chaos going on in my life at that time. I was so shocked when I logged on and saw that! I had to blink really hard a few times....I thought I was seeing things!
I never thought I would ever get a DD!
Thanks so much for your kind words and congratulations! I really appreciate them!

Melissa, a very poignant shot, there is no greater bond than that between a human and there beloved dog. whether it be a pet or a working dog. My wife and I know this from experience, having lost 2 dogs over the years to old age, it breaks the heart to lose them and leaves a void that never seems to be filled, no matter what. You have captured that feeling for me wonderfully here, and I can only say while on the one hand it evokes sad memories for me, on the other it brings back memories of so many happy times with our dogs. thank you for sharing this work with us all.

Simon, thank you for your comments and I've also shared and do share a very special bond with my dog. I've lost two dogs, one just over a year ago, to a horrible disease that she struggled so bravely with for years. It's so hard to lose them, no matter how they go, and, you're right, that void just never seems to be filled. This image here, came from a truly touching ceremony that I will never forget and am truly grateful to have been a part of. I've never witnessed anything like it before...how the entire community came together to honor that fallen K-9 Officer. Just goes to show you that they are more than "Just dogs!"
