Description This is another dev thats come abou tas a result of me teaching myself some new stuff

I've been playing in 3DSM6 and learning how to do some caustics. I tried to use some blocks in a funky configuration but thats been done sooo many times before that I didn't think I could get away with it. Hence I came up with the idea of a Jurasic Park type trapped bug. I would claim credit for modling the bug but I didn't - its off a freebie mesh site.

Hope you like it

Index was actually quite high on this one (about 1.8 I think) - and yes bubbles would have made it more like ice but they would also have taken away from the cleanness of the piece (in my opinion anyway) - hence why I decided not to put them in

I did think about putting a "pool" next to the cube but decided that again it detracted from the cleanness of the piece...

Thanks for the comment though Most useful to get someone elses views

Heres what I like:

Very nice shadowing

I like the image and texture of the ice, especially the creature inside of it. very good.

Here's what I don't like:

What's not to like?

Overall Rating: 10/10

Hmm, I don't know much about this type of work so it's kinda difficult but I'll tell you honestly what I think if that's of any use...

Okay so it's looking pretty damn good to me but there are a couple of things I'm gonna pick holes in (disregard me if you like), firstly I'm uncertain about your choice of colour, the purple kinda works, gives it a sophistication and a modern feel but I am thinking as it's an ice cube maybe it should be blue...not really that important but *meh*

Also the ice cube looks really cool from a distance, it works really well but sadly up close there is *something* missing, it's just not quite working as a believable icecube, can't say why...so that was useless for you

Oh and also your title is incredibly small which means there is a lot of empty negative space on the left there...it's made worse by it's position, it's almost dropping out of the picture...maybe bigger and up slightly in the space.

Hehe - thanks for the comment

In response....

The pic is supposed to be blue and on my monitor it appears to be blue.....I must admit I haven't calibrated it recently but I did try and make it *more* blue. Doing it though just made it look fake and very abstracted, hence I settled with the subdued colour you see .

I agree about it needing something more close up....I'm still learning and this is one of the voodoo magic things I'm yet to learn - I'll let you know what it is when I've learned it .

As for the gap on the left - try putting some icons in it and it soon fills up. Seeing as this is suppsoed to be a desktop its important to leave space for icons - personally I don't like large titles as I think they tend to get in the way....hence I try and make mine as unobtrusive as possible

Again thanks for the crit - it is very greatly appreciated that you took the time to comment so fully

I like it's subdued colouring (maybe could be even more subdued...), just would be nice if it was say subdued blue, maybe some grey and white too to give it that iceness...but anyway yeah...I'd try keeping the blue very subtle and subdued so it's not too overbearing, fake as you say.

And yeah I can see your point about space for the icons, forgot about those...whoops! And I agree with you about small titles, text tends to look crappy when bigger...still I would have made it say ~2x as big. Infact now that I think about it, I'd bring it *slightly* up and across so it just filled that space a bit more...even with icons it's still hanging of the page... Maybe needs some relationship with the ice cube, with that in mind (this is hard to explain but...) see the diagonal on the bottom right of the ice cube, I 'd suggest placing it on that diagonal line as it 'extends' visually out into the space on the left. That possibly would create a relationship between the two elements... That probably came out as jibberish so I'll stop now.

But anyway, hope some of that was vaguely useful...happy to give you some feedback.

I think you might be right - it *is* a little too low.....I just had a wicked idea. I wont say what it is though you'll have to wait for my next piece to see it

Again, thanks for the feedback

thats really cool, the ice could look more transperant, but nontheless you have pulled it off

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MindPhase In reply to adit [2004-06-07 12:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Its about as transparent as I could make it. The problem is the refraction of light pulls in the black of the background unfortunately, giving the appearance that its more opaque that it actually is

Thanks for the comment though
