Description My Minecraft version of the Empire State Building in New York.

Scale is about 1:3 of the real building due to the 256 height limit.

Took about two weeks, with 3 days of intense work on the exterior. Will work in interior soon.

Historical Info:

The Empire State Building stands in the New York district of Manhattan, on the intersection of Fifth Avenue & West 34th Street. This building is an absolute icon of New York City, appearing in advertisements of many kinds promoting the city.

Construction began in late 1929 with the intent on being the world's tallest building. When completed in early 1931, it succeeded in this, beating the nearby Chrysler Building to the accolade. It was a remarkable feat of engineering at the time, not to mention the speed at which it been constructed, from digging the foundations to crowning it with it's spire on top, it stands at a height of 443 meters, with 102 stories, at a cost of $41 million (about $600 million in today's money).

It's completion co-coincided with the Great Depression, a time of mass unemployment & poverty in many parts of the world, & the USA was yet another victim in the economic slump. Reflecting on those harsh econimic times, most the building's office spaces sat empty, giving it the nickname 'the Empty State Building'.

After the 1950's, the Empire State Building's fortunes took a turn for the better, due in large part to the United States emerging from World War II as the world's largest industrial & economic power. An investor paid $51 million for the building, a massive sum in that time.

During it's existence it has received a number of upgrades, even changing the windows ensures it saves millions in heating costs. The observation decks on Empire State are some of the most popular in the world, attracting millions of tourists a year.

Even though The Empire State Building has been surpassed in height by the One World Trade Center, it can be considered a wonder of the world in the fact that it has set the blueprint for later skyscrapers, and despite it's age, it remains as an icon of New York City.

yeah, my "best build" is a house that has a farm,2 floors (not counting the mine) and 4 or more rooms. that is all that makes it better than my usual dirt shack or npc house.

We all start somewhere: if you're looking into get into building seriously I suggest you build a NPC Villager house & experiment with it. The more you do that, the greater the volume of ideas will come to you. Then you'll have the drive to do better things every time

I did a lot of research & worked out it's proportions in relation to it's real-world dimensions & the one block = one metre logic in Minecraft. This works for skyscrapers especially.

I don't think I'd ever get a job as an architect, newly grad architects face the lowest employment prospects.

Snakegirl234 In reply to MinecraftArchitect90 [2013-12-11 14:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Well I didn't really expect that. But maybe next time you should use stone. Just a thought.Β

[Sounds more like advice to me.]

Eruka you stay out of this!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MinecraftArchitect90 In reply to Snakegirl234 [2013-12-11 14:34:08 +0000 UTC]

I was going to use white stained clay to match the building's hue at dawn. Then I settled on sandstone. I didn't consider using stone as it looks a little too dark...

My main focus in Minecraft is building anyway, I'm competent, & I strive for improvement. Before I build, I study floor plans & layout, & the history of whatever I'm building.

For a long time I wanted this structure in my world. Either this or Sky City Changsha, so I went for this. I'm working on another skyscraper, & for the next one, I'm using blocks of coal with a reinforced interior. Coal isn't fireproof :\Submit Comment

Interesting. I have no idea what the Sky City Changsha is, and I really don't care unless I can somehow use it to get the DWMA to finally leave me alone.Β

[Say the one who turned themselves in that one time.]

Alright Eruka. If you can manage to tell me why you would mention that, I won't let Fluffy eat you. Now what's your answer?

[Hmm... Oh I got it! It's relevent.]

You were very lucky there.Β
