Description

My newest work: Budapest's Széchenyi Chain Bridge!

Scale is twice the original, had to adjust the cabling and space between the towers.
Used FlowsHD 128 x 128 resouce pack + BSL Shaders for this build.

Historical Info:

Spanning the mighty Danube River in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge is not just a historic landmark in the purest sense: it is also a great feat of engineering which enabled the flourishing of one of Europe's finest cultural centres and propel Budapest's reputation as a thriving metropolis.

Before this magnificent bridge came to being, Budapest was actually two cities separated by the Danube: Buda, on the west bank, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary in the middle ages, and Pest on the east bank. Buda's location made it an ideal capital due to the hilly terrain which made it highly defensible. Despite being a thriving cultural centre in Central Europe, it fell to the Ottomans in 1526 and they ruled for over 150 years. It was until 1718 that Hungarian sovereignty would be restored.

The notion that a great suspension bridge to connect Buda and Pest was forwarded by Hungarian politician and writer István Széchenyi (1791 - 1860) who, allegedly missed his father's funeral due to the slow mode of crossing the Danube by boat or by foot in winter when the river froze, advocated that a great bridge would not only benefit Budapest in terms of transport but also improve economic development. In 1840 work on the bridge began, designed by the English-born engineer William Tierney Clark. The bridge consists of two identical towers linked by cast iron cabling and supports. After nine years of work, the bridge was completed and opened to the public, shortly after, Buda and Pest were united into one city: Budapest, in 1873.

During World War 2, advancing Soviet forces who launched a relentless offensive against the retreating German armies pushed them back to Budapest in December 1944. Amidst fierce fighting, The combined Soviet-Romanian armies drove the Germans out of the city by January 1945, at which point they destroyed all bridges in the city, including the Széchenyi Bridge. Only the towers remained in tact. However it was rebuilt in 1949.

Today the bridge still serves as a major crossing across the Danube for the city as well as a tourist attraction, nearby stand Buda Castle on the Buda side of the city whilst the Parliament Building, known as Országház, stands on the Pest side, within walking distance. Budapest has become a very popular tourist attraction for its countless sights, vibrant cultural scene and nightlife. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge stands as a monument to the Hungarian nation during its time of its flourishing in the late 19th century, which further cements Hungary’s position on the European continent.

Huh-ho! I had no idea there was this much history in the city of Budapest, let alone the fact that it was once two smaller cities divided by a river.
Your Minecraft recreation build of this bridge looks pretty awesome.

I still think it's remarkable that Buda and Pest were essentially twin cities separated only by a river until 1873.
