This is absolutely gorgeous!

Also random question; what tool/brush settings do you use when smoothing out the details? I always manage to mess up when I get to that stage

Throughout the whole process I vary brush size, keep the hardness around 85%, turn on pen pressure so that the opacity is dependent upon how hard I press and paint like that. I just constantly keep selecting the hues that come up from using varying opacity and blend that way. Sorry if that's hard to understand ^^"

Ah so you smooth it out by using the brush tool to blend it together through adding more hues rather than using a smudge or blur? That makes sense, thank you , I'll have to give that a try!

Oh, lord, no smudge or blur! I don't smudge manes and tails fur or anything, ever. I find it such a round about way to try do smooth things out. I honestly think that when you're focusing on more than just your brush tool and trying to incorporate other tools, it's harder to learn and kind of mentally messes you up balancing so many things at once.
Try out new things of course because you never know what you'll latch onto and excel at, but I find it much easier just to be a one trick, or tool, pony. If you have any more questions ever, feel free to note me. I love to help and would even make a tutorial or example for you personally if ever needed and I had spare time.

i know i shouldn't butt in but i definitely agree!
the only time i EVER use smudge is with a very very low opacity to SLIGHTLY smudge manes and tails. (just to rid any really rough bits) or when like... blending the edges of an overlay layer

Glad to hear someone else agrees with the pains of the smudge tool. To a beginning artist it sounds like an easy fix but it is completely the opposite

Definitely! I think the problem is that, while okay in small doses new artists see it and go: i can blend wverything with tjis! Which is when it gets overused and makes a mess

Ah, thank you so much! I'll definitely have to try that soon <3 thank you so much for your help!
A tutorial or example of how you get it to look so beautifully smooth and blend so well would be appreciated but of course only if/when you get spare time :3
I'll definitely let you know if I have any more questions and do you mind if I ask for your opinion on the outcome once I've had a try?

I have absolutely no problem offering advice or checking something over! I'd love to.
I'll start throwing ideas around for a tutorial like, I've been itching to make a new one. I think I'll condense the smoothing into an pretty sizely Tut on how I paint or something. Idk, I'll figure something out.

If I may ask, what was your first pieces like?

Okay thank you ♥

Awe, I think they are adorable.
It's a good start for sure!
What do you recommend to do first to start painting an drawing digitally?
I tried to start last night but it seems difficult.

MinervasMuse In reply to UnbornLegacyArt [2016-04-03 23:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, um, hmm... It kind of depends what you want to start with. Most people learn to paint subjects first because they're most interested in those. If that's you're ball park I'd start off learning cell shading off YouTube tutorials.
If you want to paint backgrounds first, they're more abstract and less exacting so you sort of just throw colors down and paint shapes. The most important thing to learn for backgrounds is color theory. You need to understand how to put hundreds of hues together, like in real life, in a background without it looking like a mudd puddle. My massive horse tutorial on how to paint realistically covers it lightly enough for an introduction.
Hopefully that helps

UnbornLegacyArt In reply to MinervasMuse [2016-04-04 00:09:47 +0000 UTC]

Okie dokie, I wanted to start with just horse portraits and than move into backgrounds. I took color theory already in college for my degree so that I do know what you mean by it.

Okay, I'll try that; may I have a link too it?

MinervasMuse In reply to UnbornLegacyArt [2016-04-04 00:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for my late reply!
There is the link. It's a bit outdated but I tried to focus on introducing a little bit of every concept into how to paint rather than diving deep into any of them.
Honestly, if you're just starting with horse portraits, I would find some nice stock images or pictures that you would have permission to paint and just try painting those. I learn most when I try to repaint something realistically, and it's rather easy since everything is presented right in front of you without you needing to make up shading or colors on your own. Let me know if you need anything else, I always love helping.

Thank you so much ♥
Okay, that sounds good! I'll start on one tonight possibly!
One more question I think; what size of a brush do you normally go between using?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MinervasMuse In reply to UnbornLegacyArt [2016-04-04 10:44:16 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply again, but for brush size it varies widely throughout the entire piece depending on image size, what detail I want, what area I have to cover. Generally I start big and go smaller as the piece gets more detailed.

UnbornLegacyArt In reply to MinervasMuse [2016-04-07 00:19:14 +0000 UTC]

All good! Okie dokie! That's really helpful!  What's the best way to blend when painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MinervasMuse In reply to UnbornLegacyArt [2016-04-07 00:22:46 +0000 UTC]

Typically what I do is paint with my brush set to opacity reliant upon pen pressure, that way depending on how hard I press I can get many different shades to work with. To blend them together, I color pick the varying shades I just created and continue the painting process with my brush set to that varying opacity.
That may not be easy to understand from just my crappy description, so let me know if you need something more or an example somehow.
