Oh and one more question,
whenever I start drawing using the brush or pen tool I the area in the "lines" becomes filled.
Uh ... I'm really new at this but I don't believe thats supposed to happen,
any ideas?

Yeah...where you select the colors, (where the colored box is at the bottom of the toolbar, with the outline box behind it) make sure that the "fill" color is set to transparent (underneath the boxed there is a smaller box, white with a red line going through it. Click that)

Well, you can do vector art that is any size. The cool thing about vector art is that it is infinitely rescalable - you won't lose any quality by blowing it up or shrinking it down, plus the filesize is very small so a huge file won't be THAT much bigger than a small file.
Illustrator has a default image setting of 8.5 by 11 inches...but you can change it to be whatever size you want.

Although I don't use illustrator, I found this tutorial inexplicably enlightening. I think it must be the bit about eating a grilled cheese sandwich.
