Description now.. this is a quite personal piece for me.. It started with a topic from Sketchoholic..'Ghosts' (Daniela Strijleva interview's contest).

I was going to create something comedic before but all of sudden memories of my granma came back to me. She passed away quite a while ago but I still remember how devastated i was that time. I tried to pour all my emotion into this one.. which resulted in a really depressing weekend. It was really exhausting both mentally and physically when I did this drawing - the sad music that I listened was making it worse too.

I'm glad to be able to finish it - it's quite a relieve in the end. I miss both my granpa and granma.. I wish that they're both in peace and happy somewhere .. sniff..

β€œGoodbye and Welcome” by minitreehouse is both a moving tribute to their loved ones and an allegory for what may come after this life.

First of all, the quality of the piece is exquisite. There’s an obvious attention to detail – the scraggly lines for the tallest man’s beard; the mottled reds, greens, and browns for the bed – without going completely overboard. The visual simplicity of this work and the overall complexity of the artist’s message is what really make the piece so poignant.

There are two sides to this work – the left and darker side revealing the sorrow of losing a loved one, a truly horrible and universal emotion we feel; and the warm glow of the afterlife to the right, a hopeful vision of what’s to come. This distinction is very clear and very effective. The palettes for both sides chosen by the artist are appropriate. The cool blues, dark browns, and grays suck you into the depths of despair that the three figures are sharing with one another. They connect you to the grandmother’s passing through the somber treatment. The smooth transition between the mourning figures to the body, to the grandmother’s ghost, and the ghostly welcoming committee is my favorite part of the entire work. I especially love the internal warm glow of the flowers, which I find to be symbolic of rebirth, or a new beginning, on the other side with the ones you love. That symbolism brings about a cathartic experience, drawing you up from the pain of loss to the joy of hope – something everyone should have, when the afterlife and the unknown become a generator of fear. It is comfort and comfort is what anyone would want during this particular life experience.

I could see this being a part of a children’s book on loss. It’s got a cartoony feeling to it that I think makes it approachable to any audience, adults and kids alike.

The only thing that I would have any suggestions for would be cleaning up the sketchy pencil lines a little around the window/curtains, the mother, and the iv bags. But that may have been an intentional choice, if so – that’s fine. If not, it’s easy fix with an eraser. Not a big deal.

Bravo to minitreehouse! I look forward to other works at this caliber of thoughtfulness and technique.

I know its pretty relative what I'm about to say but I guess it differs from taste to taste. Judging from the picture ,I think she had a good death. Surrounded by people who loved her and greeted by people who will love her for the end of time. I guess no one can possibly want more than be with the people he loved when his/her time comes. And all we can do is hoping that our loved ones pass aways peacefully.

Amazing piece, just...amazing. My grandmother is going to be passing away soon, possibly in a few days. I saw this piece as an example of one of the categories. I had to see it up close. Beautiful, touching, and meaningful. Well done. I will be sharing this with my family.Β

I buried my grandmother two days ago. Must admit I'm crying here.Β
I truly hope she will see all her loved ones and they all are there with golden flowers put in her hair.Β

It's amazing picture. The white background works for once to make the picture more alive. To make the shadows more intense, to make the sadness more intense. It's amazing how something so sad is so happy at the same time.Β
