Description
"The (Hawk’s) spirit is different from man’s. It is unconstrained, self reliant and usually stronger than ours. She has no self pity, no fear. That is why we admire her so; almost like a tangible aura. Even on the brink of death, her spirit remains intact. Contact with such a spirit enhances and strengthens our own through example and affiliation." --- Dr. Nick Fox, From Falconry by Jacek StrekThere is something particularly breathtaking and addictive about wild passage Red-Tailed Hawks.
Their adaptability and robustness is what astounds me-- to think that this animal came into the world this year, has already left its parents and began hunting and surviving and migrating on its own, and is now adjusting to the rigors and lifestyle of falconry, is a really awe-inspiring and humbling thing. I cherish these days where I get to partake in the experience of training this awesome animal, just as much as I will cherish the day he first flies free, the day he gets his first kill and every kill after that. And I will cherish the day I release him back into the wild, where he will adjust once again and, Lord-willing, survive. I just pray my soul can keep up with his soaring, changing, adapting, wild one! I look forward to flying other birds and other species in pursuit of new game through the years to come, but I am certain I will never tire of the Red-Tailed Hawk.
**Please note that falconry is a highly regulated type of hunting in most countries, and here in the states, requires the licensed falconer to have passed an examination, inspection of facilities and equipment, partake in a two-year apprenticeship and so much more. These birds are not pets; they are hunting animals that we are privileged to work with. **

What does it feel like having him on your arm? Can you feel his talons through the leather?

You can certainly feel where he's perched. The leather deflects the sharp talons, though-- although, sometimes their talons will find holes in older gloves.

Ouch and I doubt it's pleasant when they do.
