Description My first serious portrait study in colored pencil. I have a lot to learn, but, it didn't come out as bad as I feared. Making the nose too centered and too long threw me off from the git go. Changed it some, but, not as much as I should have. Not recognizable from the ref. so I won't be posting that. I had to make too many changes in order to save it. Dang! Human hair is hard!

Prismacolor pencils on Strathmore pastels. Approx. 7.5" x 10" in actual size.

The drawing looks a bit abstract, but still modern. The coloring is fantastic. Great job with the pencils. I hate hair too.

I can tell by your drawings of flowers and animals that you have very good colored pencil technique. With portraits, you have to be very careful about proportions because as humans we are very sensitive to anything that is "off" in a face. A good way to check that everything is in its proper place is to hold the drawing up to a mirror, or flip it horizontally on your computer. Anything that's off will become immediately apparent. Yes, hair is hard to draw but you did a good job. Altogether you did a great job for a first time portrait. Looking forward to seeing your next portrait!

Thanks so much for taking the time to truly review the piece! Yes, for quite awhile I claimed a mental block about drawing people. Okay, true enough in finding something that made me want to try, but, had I just jumped in years ago and put in as much practice on people as animals and flowers, I'm sure I'd be better by now....lol.

So, this was my jumping off point and I didn't do the planning I should have with features and proportions only so I wouldn't get bogged down or discouraged and stop. No more excuses other than finding the time to draw at all.

Thanks! Glad I finally got the first one out of the way. I've actually caught myself already thinking of doing another one soon. Didn't see that coming....lol.

Thanks, but, you know i feel the opp. is true. Animals over people. Maybe I should start laying a small pic of a dog or cat over the face while I work on the hair?.....lol.

I think it looks pretty good.
I think animal hair is much harder then human hair.
