Description
Just last week I was astonished to read there were wild deer in Minnippi Parklands (my local wetland park) in suburban Brisbane. Over many years of going there I'd never ever seen them or any evidence of them. Then out of the blue yesterday afternoon I spotted two stags! Deer are definitely a rarity in suburban Brisbane, so I was thrilled to see them. I would have been even more thrilled had they moved into the light but I suppose we can't have everything.Related content

Gorgeous! The yellow foliage makes a lovely touch.
I have always had a love for deer, especially as my favourite movie of all time is Bambi. Hah. They make such lovely subjects.
I don't know where Minnippi is but there is a well story everyone tells here about why there are wild deer around my end of greater Brisbane. So it goes, a married couple who lived in Brookfield had an argument, I believe he had an affair or something? I am not sure. But to spite him, the wife opened the gate and let out all of his deer. To this day the run wild around the rural area of Brookfield and Moggil.

It may well be a true tale, but I read a report on deer in Qld which said they were difficult animals to keep as they tend to escape because they're naturally fearful of humans (which shows good judgment, I reckon). Thus, we have these little pockets of deer in places like Brookfield and Gympie (and other semi-rural areas). What's weird is that Minnippi (in Tingalpa) is surrounded by suburbia, so it's quite a mystery as to how they got there.
