Description
part of my fighting for? series where i depict kids in protest rallies... once again, do they know what they're fighting for?i have to make it clear though that protests here in the philippines are almost always political in nature... its almost always a stab at the current administration... they use issues, be it about a war in a foreign land, price increase, wage increases, heck even the price of pan-de-sal (a bread common in the philippines) to throw mud at the current administration whoever is seated there... and most of the time... these protest rallies get disperesed... rather violently at times...
kids have no place in rallies of this nature... they have no business marching with militants knowing that anytime rubber bullets or tear gas would rain down on them... they are victims of politicking... victims of mud throwing... this should not be.
---
[link]
i've covered a LOT of protest rallies... and i mean a LOT! and almost always... these groups bring kids along... probably sons or daughters of members of militant groups... i really dont like this idea... in the first place... why bring these kids? do they know why they're there? do they know what they're fighting for?

I've met 8 year olds that have a better understanding of why they're at rallies than some of the adults so assuming that kids should limit their opinions to "show&tell" is missing the point. Kids grow up in the surroundings of their parents and if parents are working for a better future for themselves and their kids then unless Police are intending to brutally attack those people then there's no reason the children can't be part of protest.
I know what you mean by children being exploited and I agree to an extent but I'm not kidding, I've spoken with kids at rallies that DO understand what the main gist of the protest or rally is and DO understand that wars, etc hurt kids just like them in other countries, especially ones that came from those countries and still have families, parents, cousins, brothers & sisters still there.
either way, nice shot, will check out the rest of your gallery.
regards

Aww, that little girl is so sweet, peering up from under her sign. Reminds me of how during the elections here in the US, I saw pictures of kids marching around wearing t-shirts that said Kids For Kerry. Very striking photo... I agree, children have no business in a place like that and parents have no business bringing them along.

It's sad how sometimes, kids have to deal with their parents' crap. I totally agree with what you said. What is up with bringing kids to rallies? (It's like dragging newlyborns to the mall... pretty shallow but you get the idea, the range of this sort of attachment or involvement of kids has a wide range.) Another think that ticks me off are activists or pseudoactivists who keep on rallying against the "American occupation" in Iraq. Yes, it has cost and is still costing a certain amount of damage but at the same time, it's trying to hold together Iraq to a certain degree as well. A greater damage might ensue if they leave Iraq, since it will partly be sacrificing the already unstable security over there. I may not be totally right but that's what I think anyway.
Great job with the composition, angle and colors, and you're brave for documenting these rallies. I haven't gone to a single rally yet but I'm planning to document the President Evil rally (posters all over Philcoa). Not that I am trying to support it or anything... nyahaha.

I agree with you but not just that, it would be way too dangerous! They could get crushed, trampled on, caught up in fights (Peaceful protests always seem to go wrong don't you think?) and your right what would a little kid do if the police were spraying tear gas at them! Some parents are foolish and should realise what they're doing.

This is such an interesting angle on protesting and the war..one that I don't think I have seen before.
Usualy we see protests as good, as standing up to the man, as fighting for what you beleive in. You bring up some excelent points, points I never thought about before. Thanks for the enlightenment

I must agree with you. It's totally unfair to the children. I've seen the anti-abortion people with those disgusting signs (that don't even depect real abortions) holding their little children on their shoulders with signs; the children holding the "Thank God for 9/1" signs protesting homosexuality...and I think...Why? They don't really have an opinion about these things, they don't even understand them. Children don't need to grow up any faster than they already do.
Thank you for your submissions. Hopefully, people will open their eyes.

I don't know what your politics are and for the cause of fair comment I don't want to know, but I think your opinion about kids in protests is right on, it reminds me of seeing kids who are 3 or 4 holding signs about abortion, money, or any other issue.
Great idea!

On the news youre always hearing/seeing all the other countries, everyone talks about how the protesting in X is so rah rah and how they are doing it is so rah rah, butwhen ya try to say the same thing about philippines, they all go blank. its like the world is blind to it. orat least, england is, i dont know aboutother countries. but i have rarely seen philippines on the news for things such as this!

at gay pride here in boise, the catholics make their kids hold up bigoted signs in protest, and 2 years ago... saint maries school made each of the classes 1st - 8th grade put a total of 3500 white crosses in the kickball field in protest of abortion!!!
gah!

I agree that it is wrong for a school to abuse children, making them do things they don't want, but at the same time, an unborn child is still a child, and after a certain point in the pregnancy aborting the child is murder, so if they want to do it they should have to do it as soon as they know about it, or they shouldn't go whoring in the first place... (Whoring meaning that they're having Unprotected sex, i mean they're just being sloppy, if they're gonna have sex for fun, at least use a f-ing condom!)

I don't know what their opinion on that usually is, but from what I heard that usually ends up killing both the mother and the child. I remember reading an article a couple of years ago about artificial wombs, perhaps if the women who end up having to have an abortion due to this kind of pregnancy could use an artificial womb to nurture their children... Unfortunately the artificial womb is not very successful, the (goat) fetuses it has been tested with never made it to the point of birthing, The scientists working with this technology are still unable to get the fetus to develop all the way to birth, though they say they're close... Once the technology is perfected I can imagine most people using artificial wombs. I, as a guy can imagine it is much better than birthing, I've heard that that is one of the most painful things a woman can go through...

now if only the catholic church would back off with the anti-condom thing

right fucking on.
I may not live there, but I agree, we have the same shit here in the states, and it happens everywhere, sick individuals use children as a way of cover. "ZOMG YOU ALL SHOT A KID WE PUT IN THE WAY" news media picks it up and runs with it.
Thus whoever disperses the protest gets made to look bad.
Also happens in the middle east.
I agree that we need to get the hell out of Iraq, but violent protests and using low tactics isnt the way to go about doing it

It's one thing for grown people to mindlessly protest things but to knowingly put children, who have no idea (usually) about the wide world of politics, into that kind of situation makes me sick... I find this sorry excuse of what's supposed to be 'dissent' mostly laughable, but this is just plain wrong.

that photo is amazing, you really deserved that DD. the angle, the subject, the girl's face etc is fantastic
and I agree, children shouldn't be taken to places like this, you don't want to hurt them or scar them in some way. and this photo really shows that because she looks so innocent and small.
the worst thing is when parents have irrational and wrong views and children end up brainwashed into it and then end up hurt

Perfect job and congratualions for the DD! Certainly deserved ^_^
