Description Istia is a part of my own fantasy world, and this map shows how the geography and human settlements were impacted through the old Ages to make it look as it is now. Various cataclysm and wars described in the timeline changed the country from a peaceful forested land connected to the continent to a lonely island in the middle of the giant Inner Sea, but thankfully Istia is today a safe and comfortable place to live in

This map was done for the August 2018 Cartographer's Guild challenge I was lucky enough to win. My purpose there was to experiment a different style and work on Gothic and medieval ornaments.

Istia Timeline map is available in my Inprnt gallery  if you're interested !

Hope you'll enjoy ! ^^

This looks great and you are the master of frames ... Will u ever make a tut on how you invent those ?

Thanks a lot Naima !
The fact is... my process varies a lot depending on the map and constraints I have. Most of the time, for personal projects like this one, I have the concept of the border, map and color scheme even before I draw the first line of anything. For this one I wanted some medieval/gothic inspiration and played with various elements that would restitute the appropriate feeling I wanted for Istia : elegant shapes, seaweds and falling leaves to show the perpetual sea/land fight, spiral to figure the storms and whirlwind... But I followed the "dragon-border affair" and I know you're not asking for inspiration tips, are you ? ^^
I always consider the border being a part of the map itself, and not an additionnal ornament added afterward, meaning I always use exactly the same technique for both : same brush, sames steps. For example if I draw my mountains with 1/ a basic 4px round brush + 2/ a plain rock color + 3/ a shading + 4/ a lighning, then it's exactly what I'll do for the border : 1/ draw the frame with the same 4px round brush + 2/ add plain color + 3/ add shading + 4/ add light. So the styles are perfectly consistent. Of course, this can be applied to every style : linework or full digital painting like your Fresco di Ausonia, which has a perfect map/border match you can be proud of ! ^^
Hope it helps, but don't worry too much : you're doing amazing maps

Aww great answer ^^ thankyou... I have another question later if I can send u a pm ...
Infact for Fresco I used the same style and technique to make the frame ... for my recent wip I used more automated process and Inkscape more precise vector shape to make the repetitive pattern  ... still not convinced by it ...

Very cool! It's neat to watch the changes to the landscape, and the ornaments are on point. Really nice work.

Great work - a believable evolution of the coastline, and one which leaves me wondering what magic or technology would allow me to explore the sunken cities of the Third Era!

Istia's surrounding seas could definitely attract archeologists, alchemists and magus of the whole world, but I think the actual governement prefers to keep flooded what's underwater for a while. Bad memories from bad ancient times, where people weren't wise towards magic. But well, let's be honest : it wasn't exactly the poor Istia's fault... Ops ^^

I especially love how cities are not only founded and collapse, but their names change over the ages, too. Great attention to detail.

Hehe, thanks a second time, Mobiyuz ! Actually it was a nice worldbuilding task. I have a couple of notes about those cities and their wonders depending on the era, but it also shaped the Istian's philosophy : resilient people live there now ^^
