Description

This is Green Programmer’s Tao XP for BootSkin.  It is a simplistic, animated theme that intends to be a “Unix koan for Windows,” and something in between minimal, Zen, epic, and ethereal. – Not to forget: Only made with 16 colors due to technical restrictions !

And yay, it’s my very first deviation!

The title is not to be confused with “T’Pau”!

Well, yeah, except for its infamous product activation routine, the lack of privacy protection and a bunch of other security issues~

But, alas, .. at least it was great for hacking and making our screens look colourfully.  *gg*

Besides, XP was my last Windows, since I couldn’t stand any of its successors.

If I were to have used Windows on my desktop, I'd put it into a sandbox.

.. because of sudo commands? How come?

Hm, Win7 is also an old-timer, and even for its professional versions the updates are soon going to end.

If want to switch to (Ubuntu) Linux, just go ahead! It’s free, it comes with more features and is IMO more secure than any Windows, is easily installable and updatable, and got better looks. It runs smoothly on both old and new hardware, and also talks Russian [Link to RU Ubuntu resources] . – No worries, you will make it!

Oh it's a long story, in 2011 I downloaded Ubuntu into my Netbook on Atom. It looks nice, but don't work properly, fn-keys don't work properly, cooler works on maximum speed all the time, battery lasts for 1 hour only, while on XP 4 hours, and a lot others minor problems.
One buddy of mine, who good at programming told me that all this problems you could solve through the sudo commands. So I tried and nothing happens after that I decided to back on XP.
Maybe it's now better, thank you for the link. The only problem, that on my main PC I draw in Photoshop, as I know on Ubuntu there is no such program.

However, there’re reports Xubuntu would even use more resources than the main distribution . – No prop, you can switch to Lubuntu instead. It got just a lighter desktop; any other program can be installed and used (if your box is strong enough) like with any other *ubuntu distribution. This is the official Russian forum: [Link] .

Thank you for your informative answers. Didn't know about Lubuntu)) Funny name, nice specs and many programs preinstall.
I'm afraid that's all will not work with me. Cause I remember when I first time install GIMP, it was nightmare for me, I'm so in photoshop then and now. Also 3DS MAX and a lot more.
I know emulation through the Wine, while played some Win games on Mac, but my machines are not so powerfull to run Lubuntu while emultating Windows to open up my standart programs.
I think, for myself, I only see linux OS (non-Macintosh) on smartphones, cause thats the way what wonderfull old Nokia goes with their Maemo and MeeGo.
Now I'm watching for Ubuntu Touch en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_T…
Hope soon or later we could install it on almost any smartphone

Well yes, having a really free, Linux based reliable mobile OS for any smartphone one day would be cool for sure. I’ve been looking for that also:

Nice info, as for me — there is only Ubports with Ubuntu Touch.
Definetely will learn more about Plasma Mobile and postmarketOS. Thanks.
For others
Librem, as for me, equals paranoia, Tizen — so week, Firefox OS isn't so popular, and as I know, now there is no modern device on this OS,
Sailfish OS make one big mistake start to deal with my goverment, a lot of money will spend nowhere or steal, and nothing good will happen as for me.
Inoi R7 is a rubbish phone with low specs and high price, nice example of this conglomerate))

Lineage OS is something that i totally don't understand. Android is so rubbish OS which works on java emulation on linux and they decided to built lineage on this non-sense os... Well, nothing I can said, except — "smart" move....))

Yeah, something really smart ..

I’m even dreaming of a Fairphone equipped with a free, modular OpenSource OS~

Or at the least, that some near day such an OS wipes and replaces Androld on any somewhat up-to-date smartphone, just to stop planned obsolescence as well; not to mention, of course any government should stay outside!

These guys are working on porting PureOS to mobile devices: [Link]

Off-topic: Currently Manjaro is much more popular than Ubuntu, check out the ranking list on the right of distrowatch.com .

As for me Fairphone is a nice idea, but also so expensive for it specs.
Anyway UBports it's a maximum nowadays, what we can get in working condition. And as I understand it has the fastest develop process.
I'm not so good in programming, as you're already understand. Maybe for me such OS will be nice to live with.
Not full opensource but with a lot of freedom.

mitoXD In reply to GiorgioN [2018-06-29 19:46:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, bad luck~

The main distribution "Ubuntu" uses Gnome for the desktop, which is bad for weaker machines like netbooks. – I suggest the distro "Xubuntu", which uses XFCE and is low on resources, see this [Link] . – You could pick the latest LTS version.

Since 2011 Linux generally has become much more convenient to use and install. Most hardware will be detected automatically, and there are also many laptop gimmicks, too; my laptop battery also lasts about 4 hours. Installation has become (almost) a snap. If you know what you want, e.g. your basic Xubuntu desktop could be ready within 10-15 minutes. And you won’t need sudo that much, just for configs, maintenance, and installations.

Regarding Photo$hop, I don’t know what you need it for. You could replace it with Gimp , which is also free and popular and runs on any OS! IMO Gimp is a full replacement for P$, I use it every day! – If you really depend on P$, you can also try to use it in a virtual machine containing Windows, or use P$ with wine, see this topic . But that’s not trivial, and will have to consult many wikis, howtos and forum posts.

I like how you have applied a 'poster-like' or 'cutout' effect to the water droplets, I enjoy working in vector most of the time, I think this could work well if I was to do my own version or twist (my own project). good job

Anyway this is all in the wallpaper, which is not from me, and which I scaled down to 16 colors. Also it’s no vector at all, just an odd Windows bitmap.

... well, obviously you got your own private power plant in your garden!
Glad the machines you mentioned are off-line anyway.

Once I also collected old machines as spare ones, or to teach myself network stuff. Or simply I "felt pity" for them only thrown away for being not up-to-date any more after only a few years of service ... Yet I still prefer second hand computers, as they usually suffice for my everyday needs, and they don't make any trouble regarding Linux drivers. However I recently had to clean up the complete old as the hills boxes just to gain storage room back.

But I still keep my old Windows licenses, in case I'm in the need of virtual machines. And hacking Windows is fun. I can't stand to rely on Windows computers only, though; then I'd always pimp them with loads of Linux functionality, if possible.  *gg*

Yeah, I gots a few old timers in the garage...

The two machines mentioned are rigs I built for the purpose of making audio recordings. They still do this job quite well, and there is no need to connect them outside the LAN. Actually, the only time they have a network cable plugged in is when they transfer project files between themselves. There are no faulty components anywhere in the machines, and as long as they work, they will continue to run in my workplace.

One of the machines is in Kentucky. The other is with me. This second computer is large and has lots of drive space. It is also a damn good MIDI engine. I have a Creative Live! card in there that does sound fonts. It also supports 128 audio streams. The problem is project size. Because of memory constraints and limited thread count, latency develops as tracks or time piles up. As such, it will be focused more on MIDI and less on multitracking.

It is for this reason that a new workstation is being constructed. There are no memory constrains on this Xeon powered machine which will run Windows 7 Pro 64bit edition until Windows 10 gets the first service pack. Since it boots off an SSD installed in a hot swap sled inside of a front external access bay, boot options are limited only by the number of SSDs containing bootable OS files. There can be one for Linux, one for Windows, etc..

Even though the sleds are hot swappable, the machine must still be powered down in order to swap drives and boot into an alternate OS. There is a key lock to prevent accidental removal of a drive during a session. The bay, made by Icy Dock, holds two solid state 2.5 inch drives in a 3.5 inch floppy disk bay. There are not many cases made today with this feature. Raijintek's Aeneas chassis is one such case.

Since I got to know Arch, I never have felt the urge to use any other distro (maybe at trying some BSD stuff for fun, but well, I'm way busy and life's too short).

Arch also has got fantastic international communities and wikis. It is not easy for Linux beginners, however. – Just start from here: [link]

Have fun! ^^

mitoXD In reply to AbdouBouam [2014-08-20 16:00:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah, that'd be much hassle then, since Arch is a rolling release, and is meant for users, who want to configure their system from base level. Besides, any modern Linux OS is fun, and IMO preferable to all kinds of Windo~zes. ^^

That's the same with Arch: [link] (though it's not .deb). However, there's much more to download with dependencies you aren't aware of, since you build your system from scratch. You probably would miss something at home then~

Cool, than you tried it, I guess?

> hoping to advance to Win7 soon

The better it is. Leaving XP, I mean.  I'm about going to Linux again; in fact, I fired XP one more time for creating such BootSkins anyway. I'll set up XP as (offline) virtual machine then, just for the rare occasions I'd need Win proggies.

So if you're going to Win7 and still like that boot screen, go ahead. You got the links for the background graphic and the text, create a version for your OS. Must be easier than for XP, as you're allowed to use more colors at least. And there are probably lots of online guides. – Haven't looked for that myself, but you could get impressions and maybe even tutorials here on dA.  ^^

Haha it's just matter of money.
I see. I haven't used Linux ever in my life.

Oh, I didn't know I actually can do that (without being a programmer, I mean). Well if it is not a lot of work then I probably will because I like things presonalized, usually I'm just lazy to put the time and work into it. >,<

> Oh wait... you mean I can actually put it as a loading image..? How? o.o

If you mean "it" for this very BootSkin, then of course no! It is for XP and vista usage only.

> Haha it's just matter of money.
> I see. I haven't used Linux ever in my life.

IMO not only of money, but also of security, so of taking things like getting control over what is running on your machines in your own hands; still wouldn't make you unvulnerable though, but far more secure. – Not to mention, stylizing your screen is much easier (and if you that'd be your taste, more radical) in Linux. And most tools for that are open source.

And that Linux would be something for nerds only is still a myth! The user interface of popular Linux distros and Windows are pretty much the same concept. For everyday needs (like office and mail stuff), generally Linux proggies can also use your Windows data.

However, your first choice would be to pick the right distribution . Popular distros also got much info like wikis with howtos, and forums with a community willing to help. Similar to dA, but less commercial.

For testing I propose to backup your important data. Defragment and shrink your Win XP partition(s), then create a dual boot system . See also a Linux distro's documentation. You won't be left alone.

Tasting Linux flavor is always worth a try. But – if you'd be still happy with Windows, then of course stay with it!

> Well if it is not a lot of work then I probably will because I like things presonalized, usually I'm just lazy to put the time and work into it. >,<

capacity building , 1st step. Well, you're about to change your OS for good reason. Anyhow you gotta something to do.

> Oh, I didn't know I actually can do that (without being a programmer, I mean).

For the boot screen, there's no programming involved. Just the mastery of an image manipulation program.
