what's up with these descriptions lmao "exclusively a male wave" what
like it's helpful but what's up with the unnecessary gendering of... movement

Honestly, you are right. This drawing is 4 years old, and I've learned a lot since then. I think at the time I was trying to just show the subtle differences between "typical" males and "typical" females. I definitely could have worded the notes much better.

This is a good reference for an absolute beginner, they're very generalized motions but very well drawn and proportioned, and the foreshortening is done nicely. The only emotion I have a problem with would be the last "sad" one. I've never in my life seen anyone look like that when they're sad. Usually their body looks just as disfigured as the face--hunched, crumpled, lots of wrinkles, and cringed up. It's a good "movie" sad, but not a realistic sad. Try doing some 10-15 second life drawings of people, and do a reference like that for your friend. It's like learning on steroids. This way your friend will get the hang of major motion lines, important physical characteristics, and body proportions, and behavior of people so eventually they wont even need a reference anymore--they'll have a huge library of people in their head that they've drawn before in mere seconds.

Really nice, i like it but this seems to be a bit of a generalization, I do the "male wave" all the time

Thank you. I think it's more in the "proper" sense. I was trying to show how a man would "traditionally" wave vs. a woman. But I'm glad you like it!

These are nice and I like the simple shading which gives a sense of volume but doesn't detract from the actual shape of the forms.
I do think it might not be necessarily wise for someone to use these as generalizations so much though. They feel more like they're poses for specific characters or people rather general body language. For instance, your sitting ladys read to me as the same refined, confident, and very traditionally feminine girl. Body language changes more through personality then gender too especially as most people are a blend of what is thought of as male and female traits.
Really though, that's just my two cents. I know you might not be looking for any thoughts on this so I hope I wasn't out of line.

Thank you very much for you cents! LoL, I do actually appreciate others opinions very much. Your points are valid, and I do agree with you that to make these poses be generalized for all females or males would not be correct. However, I was going for basics. And in my mind, before stretching to more difficult poses that stray away from the idea that women are more fluid and men are more solid, I wanted to reinforce those traits. I felt that these poses were a good jumping off point for my student. But thank you again for you comment. And I hope you check out some of my other works. Happy drawing!!

I've never heard of him, but I'll have to check him out.
The book I always go to is called Human Anatomy For Artists by Andras Szunyoghy and Dr. Gyorgy Feher. You can find it on Amazon.

These are perfect! thank you! Quick question: which program to you use, or do you sketch then scan?

MizMaxter In reply to NarnianRain [2013-03-09 05:04:31 +0000 UTC]
Sketch then scan, and edit together in Photoshop Elements 8. But if I do any digital sketching I use my Wacom tablet, and either PaintTool SAI or Autodesk Sketchbook Express.
Anyways, I'm so glad you like them!! I hope they help.
