Description
This is for anyone who wants to learn how I make basic glowing eyes. I used a close up of Wonder Man’s eye as my example.Figure 1: A normal eye. It’s important to show you this because you can see how light and color gradient looks on a normal human eyeball. This is a small but key detail for coloring in any figure with glowing or “blank” eyeballs in general. Many artists seem to forget that despite what they look like the eyes would still function like a normal human eye and need to be moist or glossy looking and reflect light.
Figure 2: The basic color gradient for Wonder Man’s eye. Where the pupil and iris would be is the basic medium red and the edges are dark red. Use a circular gradient effect to mix the colors from light to dark from the center to the edges or you can use an airbrush tool for layering lighter tones of the medium color over the darker color. This will give the impression of the eye not only being a sphere but also give the viewer the sense of where the pupil and iris would be.
Figure 3: Once the gradient is done wherever the iris would be on Wonder Man’s eye use an airbrush tool to make a lighter colored blurry edged dot where the iris would be to really define where the character is looking. This solidifies where the iris is and it also adds to the glowing energy effect of the eyeball itself.
Figure 4: To really drive home that the eye is moist and reflects light once again use the airbrush tool to make three white dots. Place one small white dot on either side of where the iris would be, and then place two larger dots roughly diagonal to one another on either side of the pupil or the entire eyeball itself.
And there you have it. You can even use this as reference for pretty much any type of eye on any type of character.
