Kaitlin is skinny. A lot of times, images of her garner catty remarks about how she needs to eat more, or whatever. Anyhow... I'd been thinking of doing a shot of her sitting in a corner with a plate with a single baked bean on it, but then I realized that it'd be pretty hard to see what was going on. Besides, the nasty remarks are often unsubtle - which means an unsubtle image is more likely to work.

Anyhow, I find it amazing that people are so concerned about whether a complete stranger is fat, or thin, or tattooed, or - whatever. As if it's their business, somehow? Well, if it's my business, I make sure my models are well-fed.

Yeesh, I support feeding people, but not with that crap!

this makes me laugh. I hate it when anyone comments on a model's weight in a bad way, whether large or not. You're pretty cool.
Also, this photograph is awesome

Really nice photoshop job, too, on the steel wire, or lack thereof.
Although I must point out: the funnel isn't colored except for a few bits in the back of it...is that a reflection or what? It's just annoying me.

The "even the buns..." line I added in photoshop. But the 100% beef was from McD's marketing department. I saw it and thought, "wow! even the chicken is 100% beef?"

i can't see the pic, as i'm only 17...

but the name caught my attention and i read your artist comment.

i think this is rather interesting to get comments like that from people though, because it's obvious that people want pictures of models that look good. if not, we'd just have a bunch of obese, toothless smokers with ratty hair or something.

yes, society's perception of beauty is a highly debated subject, but in the end, nothing will really change much, and most people really deep down don't mind that, i think.

LAWL! This is great! It does irk me that you never ever see anyone doing fashion/artistic nudes with anything other than stick-thin anna models. It isn't healthy to promote that as the only possible standard of beauty. Or to make it seem that way to impressionable idiots. And yes I do have the "skinny friend" who has the metabolism to be stick-thin no matter what she eats. But there is only one of her... I know so many more who are 'fat'(read as normal weight) who can't get that thin no matter how they starve themselves. Because no one can be that thin unless they have the hyper-metabolism. But models and pics that glorify them don't do anything at all to help normal peopl feel normal instead of like circus freaks.

It isn't healthy to promote that as the only possible standard of beauty.

Anorexia is hardly a public health crisis, compared to obesity. Personally, I don't think either is a public issue - it's the sufferer's problem and nobody else's.

BlueWingedCoyote In reply to mjranum [2008-07-22 19:14:59 +0000 UTC]

True, true. I have always thought that people's self-inflicted problems are entirely their own(I have no more sympathy for "cutters" either). It's just irks me a bit that even photographers who say that they appreciate the beauty in all women still only shoot stick-girls.
And I think there is a certain responsability as an artist to be careful what is promoted to the unwashed masses as art and beauty.

wow!

2 mcdonalds related DD's in one day. how ironic.

anyways. this picture is totally great. its true that some people can eat and eat and eat and still be really skinny because of thier metabolism. i know people like that. and some people have to watch what thier eating to be at a healthy size. everyone is different, i guess people have a hard time understanding that.

personally, if i ever get to be a big designer, i wont want my models to be anorexic or bulemic if all they want is to be super skinny. i think industry puts too much pressure on that, having curves and being a size 2 instead of 0 is perfectly fine. its all on how your body functions and what it needs and what it burns.

the black and white in contrast with the colors of the food highlights it even more, making this briliant.

great point of view! keep it up!

mjranum In reply to insaneashrak1 [2008-07-22 15:03:40 +0000 UTC]

I thought the reason designers use specific body-shapes in their models is because the initial prototypes of an item of clothing are made to a standard size. That way they can show the item without having to do a full production run.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

insaneashrak1 In reply to mjranum [2008-07-22 22:54:48 +0000 UTC]

that is sort of true. but models usually fluctuate between 0-4 so tailoring and changes have to be made anyways.

i'd rather have healthy models and a bit more work.

mjranum In reply to insaneashrak1 [2008-07-22 23:18:30 +0000 UTC]

I agree.

Back when the Spanish were making their stupid rules about Body Mass Index for runway models, I was making myself very unpopular by suggesting that if health was the issue, they should require minimum athletic performance. I.e.: models must be able to run 5 miles in (whatever) do 50 pushups in 10 minutes and 100 situps in 15. Fit and athletic girls would look fantastic on the runway. Of course, a lot of the people who are really agitating about the runway models have got "issues" with their own bodies - and are acting it out through the models. Seeing sleek, fit, athletic girls would probably make them MORE unhappy than the skinny runway girls do.

insaneashrak1 In reply to mjranum [2008-07-23 03:44:03 +0000 UTC]

Excersice isnt necesarilly the issue, although being fit is not a problem. also, doing that much burns alot of calories, making them more skinny.

i think having good relationships with models and actually caring about them and asking how they are should be enough. if someone sees something wrong with a certain model it should be looked into.

and the bmi stuff in spain was good and bad. some girls have a naturally really low bmi tho so it targeted them, but may have also highlighted those who had issues. it convicted thei nnocent and the guilty.

theres bound to be a way to rid industry of this problem with helping out the guilty. i think it starts with a little heart.
