Description
Askari had finally trained his nephew, Haki, enough where he felt confident to let him lead the guard. Haki was very proud and took the role seriously. He made a team and swore to protect the pridelands no matter what. Askari was content and so was Mohatu, his brother, and Asha, their sister. Together they made the pridelands into a safe kingdom for all animals, and now the newer generation was ready to take over and carry on their traditions.Haki and his guard would wake up before sunrise to patrol every morning but nothing really changed for the first few weeks. Even though he was still very serious about the roll, Haki was beginning to get bored. He consulted to his friends and teammates who felt the same as well.
"Maybe we could venture a little farther." Ato, his smartest member suggested.
Haki shook his head. "No our duty stays in the pridelands. They need us."
"Okay but we already patrolled the perimeter today. All we have left to do now is go home." Ato continued. "Orrrr we could go out some towards the outlands to see if any animals need help out there. After all it's a barren wasteland out there. If anything is out there it might actually need help."
Haki pondered on the idea. "I guess you're not wrong." He responded. "And how do the rest of you feel about the idea."
The guard smiled back. "Let's go!" They responded in unison.
"Well that settles it. Let's help some animals!" Haki cheered.
"And lets make sure to still stay in sight of the pridelands." Ato suggested again. "That way if anything does happen Zuzu will still find us."
"As always my friend, you are right." Haki smiled.
The group traveled the border of the outlands and pridelands and found small animals who actually did need help among the way. One was a young hare who ventured too far from his mother and was now lost. With the help of the guard he got home safely. They also helped a lizard who was dying from thirst. They brought him to a small watering hole and made sure he was going to be okay before leaving. The group was happy and proud of their accomplishments. After a while they ended up at the gorge. The sun was now in the middle of the sky as it was now midday. They looked around but didn't see anything in particular so the lions decided to finally return home. All of a sudden a loud scream broke the silence and everyone froze. Haki turned sharply towards the scream tilting his head when another scream echoed again this time yelling "HELPPP!" Haki didn't hesitate and sprinted towards the scream. Everyone followed right behind. They ran alongside the gorge when they finally spotted the source of the scream. Haki gasped. A small cub was dangling on a tree limb that was much too small for him and worse, was hanging directly over the gorge.
"Okay." Ato breathed heavily. "We need to think of something fa-"
Haki didn't listen and instead ran towards the tree as fast as he could knowing the limb was going to break any second. As he got closer he noticed the distance to the other side somewhat looked jumpable. It was a risk he was willing to take. He got to the edge and didn't hesitate leaping when the branch finally broke and the cub began to fall. The timing was perfect because Haki managed to catch the cub in midair and now the only thing he could do was hope, they made the jump. He made it by only a hair, hanging on the other side by his paws but he couldn't pull himself up. His paws began to slip when suddenly he was pulled up by his mane. It was Hodari, his strongest member. The lions managed to jump across a ledge that was much closer to the other ledge just in time. The strong lion pulled the two all the way up and Haki smiled at his team before sitting the startled cub down. The cub had pure fear in his eyes and was in shock.
"Hey kid," Haki spoke softly, "You're safe now. We're here to help, not harm you."
The cub stayed silent, his body still trembling.
"Can you tell us your name?" Ato asked but the cub shook his head as a few tears began to roll down his cheeks.
"I-I don't know.." He managed to squeak out as he continued to cry.
"You don't know your own name?" Haki asked softly as he laid down in front of the cub so that they could see eye to eye.
"I-I can't r-remember anything." the cub whimpered, "all I know is I woke up all a-alone a-and a water buffalo was trying to t-trample me." He cried harder as he spoke but the guard continued to listen carefully. "S-so I climbed that tree and it finally left me alone... b-but then I looked down and p-panicked. I couldn't get down!"
Haki gently wrapped his paw around the cub and drew him closer into his chest to comfort him.
"Shhh It's okay. All that matters is that you are safe now." Haki whispered.
After letting the cub calm down soon, Haki picked him back up into his mouth and the group returned home. On the way back Ato noticed the tangled up fur on his head that would one day become his mane.
"Hey kid," Ato started with a genuine smile. "Since we don't know your name why don't we call you Tanglemane?" He laughed slightly but no one laughed back.
"Ato now is not the time for silly jokes" Haki muffled rolling his eyes.
"Actually..." the cub smiled. "I kinda like it!"
This is a small story about the second lion guard saving the cub commonly known as, Tanglemane. In my AU the reason he doesn't have a actual name is because of amnesia. Tanglemane was with his mother near the gorge not even aware she was entering the pridelands. She tried hunting a small water buffalo calf thinking it was all alone when the mother came out very angry and attacked the lionness and cub. Tanglemane managed to get kicked by the water buffalo which knocked him out while his mother was still being attack. The lioness unfortunately was thrown off the cliff by the angry buffalo killing her instantly. As the buffalo turned around to take out the cub, he managed to wake up just in time to dodge her and ran to the nearest tree which was the one he was found hanging from. He woke up with no memory of the events and never managed to get his memory back. The guard would later find his mother but decided to keep the discovery away from young Tanglemane.
Also in this time period Uru and Ahadi had just now became king and queen and were expecting their first litter. Haki is the leader of the lion guard but isn't actually the son of Mohatu because Mohatu only had one cub which is Uru. Mohatu also refused to have anymore cubs after his mate died during Uru's birth so they decided Haki, the son of Asha would be next in line after Askari. Askari himself never had any cubs. Haki was a wonderful leader and was very courageous and fair. This is my AU so I hope you enjoy!
