Hmm. Maybe I've been using photoshop for too long, but I thought bicubic smooth WAS the default. Oh well!
Lately I've been using an unsharp mask with 100% at .3 pixels to get a cleaner resize.

Just tried that, really helps! Though new versions of PS seem to be handling resizing better with all types of interpolation.
