Description

I told ya I was gonna do RD Next.
For once, I'm kinda proud of how it came out. The hand looks a little weird though and I feel it may be too long.

I took some of the advice from my Fluttershy practice.
1.) Made the head a little smaller
2.) Made the elbow less pointy
3.) Fixed how the cloth drapes over the chest.

Any other pointers are welcome!

This one is amazing, I think the applejack one is the best human drawing you've done so far!

Not bad! These humans look like they took a long time to do.

Hey, I noticed you had a little confusion down in the comments.

You know how to make layers, right? Somewhere to one side of the screen of Sai should be something that shows all the layers. Right?

I don't have Sai but all layer-based programs have similar things so...

Look at the box with the layers and click on a layer to select it, and  look for something that says "Default" or "Normal" or something like that, and see if it has a button to click on to change it.

It should have a drop down box with a bunch of words in it. Things like "Multiply", "Darken", "Overlay" , "Add", "Dodge", or possibly

"highlight" , "luminate", etc.

These things change how the layer works. "Default" is like MS paint. It's regular color on a canvas.

Things like "Darken, dodge, multiply, burn," all dramatically change how the colors are processed by the computer, turning them into something darker based on the colors on the layers underneath them.

Typically for SHADING, you wanna make a new layer, and select "multiplY" and then use a color like purple or blue, and it will look like shadows.

That help?

Sort of, I'll have to test it out first. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Okay listen: when you figure it out, tell me. I have an AMAZING tutorial about shading with colors. Well, more of a lesson. Remind me about it when you figure it out, okay?

I'm going to leave a critique down here :'D

First off, I think you did pretty well at shading her. The shading on her clothes looks rather smooth. Same could be said for lighting, and one of my favorite examples of a combination of both pretty good lighting and shading would be the hands. I think her pose looks pretty good for her personality.

As for the other end, I think that you can mess around with colors and where the light strikes to create more dynamic poses. I'm not completely sure about this but it looks as if you used black for shades and white for light. Try using some other color for shading, even if it's just dark purple. It's alright to use white for light sometimes but might not always be the best option.

I did try messing with the colors a bit by using red instead of black when shading the skin.
As for the clothes though...I didn't know what shade to go with so I went back to black and white. I supposed I could have used blue instead though.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try practicing some more dynamic shading on my next one.

I suggest to go with one color at first and use layer modes (multiply, shade) so that the colors work out even when they're different. The color of the shadow is based on the light of the environment (example: dark blue shadow on a clear day).

Mess around with the layer modes Even if it doesn't look completely alright, there's probably an effect to clean it up.

I actually have no idea what layer modes are or how to use them.
Tried looking up a tutorial but it just confused me.

I only recently started using Sai so I'm still unfamiliar with a lot of the tools.

They basically affect how the colors on the layer show. It takes time to understand, and if you just follow tutorials that state exactly what to use/do, it might help you to understand :'D

It's kinda a lot to take on at once. It would be very impressive if you learn it soon. Good luck!
