In Dance Pantsed, the Professor claimed to have moved to Townsillve as a young adult to pursuit a dream in dancing. When that failed other scientists who claimed they were failed dancers simply encouraged him to be a scientist and that's that.

picture

Kinda glad the design style of that special never lifted off. The bloom in the episode was horrible.

In the 2016 reboot Professor Utoniums childhood is depicted in black and white as if he grew up in the early 20th century victorian era, he recalls listening to his favourate stories on the radio.

Picture

It's as if this was done by a childs impression their parents must have been around for ridiculous long time because they don't have a grasp of time.

Then there is the villain Silico which as a new villain I find has potential. I kinda like the idea of a Steve Jobs like villain that is a master hacker, master of virtual reality and is god in the machines.

picture

But his backstory doesn't make sense to me. When he was a child his parents were hardly around and only had robots as friends. But due to the PowerPuff Girls defeating a monster which fell and crushed his home and robots, Silico vow revenge to take on the PowerPuff Girls and started his villainous career as an adult.

picture

That backstory makes no sense to me. As a franchise the PowerPuff Girls have been around since 1998 but the PowerPuff Girls themselves are usually depicted as little girls, perhaps physically 3-5 years old but gven how they were born could be even younger than how they appear. Given we yet to have a time travelling episode into Silicos past there is no explanation how the PowerPuff Girls could of been present to fight monsters in Silico's childhood.

I know I shouldn't take a show like PPG'16 seriously, it's a kids cartoon, doesn't have to have a serious continuity. But same could be said for PPG'98 which established a decent continuity and stuck with it.

Omg, yes. I love the style of DP personally, but not the animation though. As gorgeous as Dance Pantsed was, I had a ton of problems with it, from them giving Bubbles an ice breath to that..Β

Yeah, I don't pay attention to PPG2016, its just incredibly bad, and not in an interesting car crash kind of bad. Most of the time its just insulting to the original

My problem with DP is that it had too much bloom making most of it bright and shiny.

Given it was a 3D animated cartoon it was understandable they could not capture the flat 2D style the original show had but the new design it did had did look appealing and fitting for a 3D animation with low-poly models to make it look more like the old series.

But for some reason it had the bloom up way too high that I can't remember significantg scenes in the special because all I remember it a lot of bright, pale colours. If they had lowered the bloom or the very least give some outline to the characters allowing them to be more visable infront of the background then I'd less complain about the design. Other than that the special is still way better than the reboot.

I agree. I wouldn't of object at all for a reboot or the very least a continuation of the PowerPuff Girls. Heck I even liked how they appeared in the Teen Titan Go! Special, the TTGo! art style actually compliments the PPG'16 designs better than it's own cartoon.

Problem is the current reboot probably shot any chance for PowerPuff Girls to ever come back as relevant to both modern and classic fans. With todays animation technology it would of been nice if a new PPG series was animated the same way as the movie.

Yeah, that's understandable, like its an eternal sunset or something.
The animation looks like they made it stuck on "step" mode or whatever its called I forgot what it was. But I just like Kevin Dart's style in general, I think it works a lot nicely as background/environment art.

Of course, Chris Battle worked on the original PPG (post-movie seasons), so naturally his style would translate well, even though they still look reboot-ish. It would be a dream come true if they made continuation to the original PPG with the movie style, I've always hoped for that since I was a child, with good writing crew of course ; ) but..all we got now is the 16reboot, though I heard its going to get cancelled after season 3 or something, not sure what happened to it now

Yeah. As said if they gave the characters black outslines or something that really makes them "pop" to our attention then I would be more forgiving about the bloom.

I haven't heard of it for a long while. What's sad is is that loads of PowerPuff Girls fans hoped for a reboot. And now that we got one... they don't want a reboot anymore. PPG'16 killed the desire for more PPG'98 reboot because they fear an even worse outcome of a reboot.

I will admit though, there are some PPG'16 villains I genuinely liked. Imagine if the Fashionista's were instead hencwomen for Sedusa or Mask Scara? And what I liked about Silico is that he reminded me a little of PPG'98 HIM only instead of dark magic and hellscapes he uses technology and cyberspace, though I'd give him a new backstory.

PPG just require a bit more fluidity in their animation, but not too much, just the right amount.

Hahaa yeaah, that ruined it for me too, lesson learned, dont just hope for a reboot unless if it has very promising crew, I thought Genndy was going to work on it, which had my hopes up all those years ago.Β
and CN still somehow pushes it, with TTG at least the crew behind it has enough knowledge of the DC lore, plus I personally like Chris Battle's art style.

Yes! Fashionistas were pretty good, I especially like the voice actress for them.Β
Maybe because I stopped watching the show, but I barely remember Silico

Honestly I wish TTGo continued the PowerPuff Girls series if they could. They portrait them much better, had more fluid and action and looked more better in TTGo! Jump City than they do in Townsville.

I think another issue with PPG''16 design style is that it's both trying too hard and not at all. I can tell they put some attention to design in scenes with buildings and Townsville but because the skyscrapers are the same colour as they sky and hardly much citizens in city scenes I forget Townsville is a city most of the time and just feels like a built-up town with a few people or something. The city designs PPG'98 was even more minimalistic and they made it worked. It felt hussle and bussle from what you'd expect from a city.

Silico was an alright villain but could be better if revised. Same goes for the Fashionistas.

The rest of the villains are even more forgettable. For example there is this one villain called "The Gnat", that's really his name, just "The Gnat" in yet whenever he shows up in an episode I somehow keep forgetting who he is. He is just that forgettable to me. He looks like a flying potato with the head of a gnome from Harry Potter.

Yes and just get rid of the hair bubble, the cowlick and sharpen Blossom's bow. Speaking of their designs, it looks like they wanted to make them child proof as possible, which is understandable, cause toys, but the original had toys too and they were still as sharp and bold as any other Genndy or Chris' art style. Everything in ppgreboot is just too bright and garish, overall just doesn't fit PPG at all, the original had balance to it, it made the Girls stood out a bit.Β

There was a gnome in Harry Potter?Β

Oh yes, in the Wizarding World, gnomes are regarded as garden pests.

The Brain Dump video pretty much explains everything that I've already said, but the thing about PowerPuff Girls is that the package depicts "three perfect little girls", but these girls are actually violent, near-sociopathic superheroes! Their show doesn't always depict blood (unless you count Buttercup kicking the devils teeth in the intro in every episode) but usually the girls fight monsters and villains usually as violently as childrens television may allow and it often depicts swolen bruises, knocked out teeth and, depending on the monster, gooey body emmisions (that isn't blood or excrement. Usually it's snot of monster goo). The show is suppose to be somewhat campy but also somewhat violent. And I say "near-sociopathic" because despite how violent the girls maybe they're still good little girls who only hurt bad guys and won't take it too overboard etc, thus allowing them to grow as characters and be more than good little girls or sadistic little fighters.

The PPG'16 doesn't really understand that. They just see the "good little girls" and remember how marketable they were and that's about it. Core characters and villains are almost replaced entirely because they're regarded inappropriate (like Miss Bellum or Sedusa) and... well, they just remove the "Power" from PowerPuff and just made it child-safe, meme-forced marketable mess.

But yeah, the Brain Dump video covers everything we agree on.

I did not know that, did they appear in the movies?

CN just want in on that "female empowerment" thing, especially nowadays when media likes to cash in on the whole "GURRL POWER" thing
Everything about them is just incredibly hollow, I feel bad for all the little girls that was given this new version

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MysticM In reply to Mn27 [2019-10-22 14:26:28 +0000 UTC]

They appeared in the original books and the Playstation games.

But that's the thing, 1998 PowerPuff Girls were already an embodiment of female empowerment through the abstract of not judging the apperance by the cover. Sweet little girls that kick monsters arse and evil villains on a regular basis. Episodes like Equal Fights and Member's Only are good example of how PowerPuff Girls represent female empowerment without being too one-sided on the matter.

But as a young male fan of the show I was never put off over the fact these heroes were little girls, I didn't really see it as female empowerment, just "empowerment" of how three little things can do so much and be so much. I just saw them as great heroes with great adventures. My only problem wit hthe show was at the time we didn't have Sky so I've seen the commercials now and again but I couldn't get to watch it at the time until much later when my family could afford Sky TV.

I mostly feel bad for todays kids in general over just the girls. Looking back we grew up in a time where Cartoon Network was not afraid to push the envelope at content for cartoons as long as it didn't go over board. Samurai Jack would cut down his foes as long as they bleed oil, slime or mucus and never blood. Cartoons that woven the lessons or morals into the story, usually lessons or morals normally too difficult for children to understand but still made it deep and beautiful, whenever mature shows like Samurai Jack or silly shows like Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken, Ed, edd 'n Eddy, Johnny Bravo or Courage. And same goes for CNs neighbours Nickelodeon and their shows with Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Doug, Angry Beavers and even Ren & Stimpy now and again.

I'm going a bit overboard with this comment response but you get the idea.
