Description
“ ‘Hold still’, the magus murmured in his ear. The resonance from the stones was setting off other vibrations; the organ pipes began to tremble in sympathy and the stained glass rattled until Jagu felt his ears would burst with the sound. Then the box exploded in a burst of light and crystal shards.”
-”Tracing the Shadow” ch. 13, by Sarah Ash
It’s an explosion of color and sound!
This is one of my pieces from my final project in Children’s Book Illustration. I chose to adapt the “boys school” episode of Sarah Ash’s novel “Tracing the Shadow” for the project. Mostly, it was all an excuse to do some Tracing the Shadow fan-art, which is truly belated considering the book came out in 2008.
For fans that know better: Its true! I did switch Jagu and Rieuk’s hair for this image. In the novels, Jagu has black hair and Rieuk has dark brown, but in this illustration I wanted Rieuk to seem a little more ominous: a shadow with a face and hands. And I wanted Rieuk to stand out against that darkness in comparison. To do this, I deviated from the script a little bit.

This looks awesome! At one point I was considering using Sara Ash's Tears of Artamon series for my thesis, but I ended up going with another piece instead. Still, it would have been cool. She has such a visual style of storytelling!
What media was this done with?

I used just about every "free assignment" as an excuse to do something from a Sarah Ash novel. And I did a series of pieces for Children's book illustration (which this piece is from) and for Illustration 4.I'd love to go back for my MA just to build a thesis on her books. XD I just love her novels.
This painting is mostly watercolor with touches of gouache here and there.

*sighs* This is just so beautiful - and their facial expressions ^^ You truly could just hand that out as a 'stare-at-it-tutorial' for facial expressions.
So much to learn from just looking at it - I really wish I could enlarge it even more. And touch the real drawing/painting, tactile junkie that I am when it comes to art ^^'
Since I've alreadey faved it, I can't do it agian, though I would. But as I've said before - your works truly become more beautiful each time I come back to look at them again.

DUDE PERSPECTIVE!!! And all those shards!! By golly you really know how to work your stuff, yo! And their expressions are wonderful! I especially love the rich colors of the background and the hilights in their hair. GOL and the coloring on the shards, those little bits of green and such.

Thank you, thank you! You're warmin' my heart.
I'm proud of how this came out, especially since I didn't like it in the intermediate stage. But I brought it back!

Oh wow that's good n dramatic! I love how you rendered the glass shards- they look sharp and brittle and reflective. So cool!
How did you get the white speckles/splatters? I tried flicking a brush loaded with white acrylic at a watercolour once and ruined the painting. How did you do it?? I must know! D:
Also loving that dudes flying black hair. *drool* Full of motion and depth and sexiness. Oh and the rays of light- also well done.
The whole thing just really works.

The white is gouache. It's opaque but waterbased, therefore it loves watercolor You just have to mask off the parts you do not want paint on and GO WILD. Like its a party with white gouache.

And I love the black hair of the guy in the back - it's so life like ^^
*considers to get scissors and cut the guy's hair to keep it* >_<'
And now I guess I'll have to search Amazon for books ... -_-'

@.@ Sarah Ash is one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend her books!
Are you going to keep that coil of hair in a locket? Or use it to make a voodoo doll?

*grins* I found her books - and they're not even 5/book ... so I'll just have to check and see if I have enough money right now
*aah!* No voodoo dolls! It's just pretty hair ... and well ... I do love pretty things >_<'
*oh* Coil you said ... ? Well ... I was thinking about *uhm* all that purty hair -_-'

Cut off all his hair? You're mad! Mad, I say!
Don't forget to read the Tears of Artamon trilogy first. Then the two Alchemyst's Legacy Books. The Tears of Artamon trilogy is AWESOME in the greatest way, and the Alchemyst's Legacy books are a prologue/epilogue to them.
Oh, and another great book to read by her is Songspinners. It ties into the others as well @,@ Its my favorite book by Sarah Ash as well.
I love giving book suggestions.

*sighs* Anyway ... I said I was *considering* to do it ... not that I would ... though I would like to -_-'
*hehe* And I love book suggestions ... cause it usually means I'll find good books so much faster
(Plus, it's impossible to resist said suggestions after seeing your drawings anyway ^^')

Your shallow comment give me joy.
o_o your list of awesome books to read is lengthening. My only suggestion is if you plan on reading Tracing the Shadow, read the trilogy that comes before it. The Tears of Artamon is epic-awesome and it makes Tracing the Shadow make much more sense. There are alot of cross over characters and plotpoints.
