Description
My last illustration for my sci-fi/fantasy class, #2 of the three paintings I completed this week! The prompt for this was something of a rip-off of that scene from The Mummy:replace the air plane with a hot air balloon. My goal was to follow the prompt but not copy the movie.Consider this my metal-head testament! While drawing the line-work I listened to nothing but Helloween (Keeper of the Seven Keys pt. 1 &2 and The Legacy).
EDIT: I finally got that sunny day I was waiting for! Now I have a better picture to post

This has a certain steampunkish feel to it *3*
ANd I've always had a mad love for goggles, he wears them so well

I'm glad you got that steampunkish feel because the prompt on this was from a story with a steampunk-esque setting. The balloon (and goggles x,x) probably help most to give it that essential steampunkiness. Something about balloons just screams "STEAMPUNK!"...

Hoy, now I'm worried about putting up the picture I took outside. The colors look much darker for some reason....
And Helloween certainly knows how to set a mood

noooo put it up! darker doesn't mean not-as-good natural light is so much better for the colours

10 hours driving = not good for the soul D8 I am impressed, though, in that time I would drive through all of Finland and start on my way back south XDD Do you have the kind of roads there that just go straight and never turn? @__@
π: 0 β©: 1
MNat In reply to theOvercoat [2009-12-23 18:23:01 +0000 UTC]
Its like that through the central valley. The road goes straight for hours! with only a few junctions that branch off along the way.
I used to hate driving through the valley because I thought It was so boring. Now its my favorite part of the trip. The colors changing with distance, all melting together! The soft gold hills! And the yonder mountains covered in snow, shrouded in clouds! (I tried to take pictures but alas...it didnt pan out too well...driving fast, having to not run off the road, etc)
The sunset was amazing though. It happened as I drove out of the valley and into the mountains. The light was slanting in rays between the snow clouds and the tops of the mountains @,@ It was great.

That sounds so pretty! A shame you didn't get any pictures, I'd love to see them <3 But true, they're not worth driding off the road for...
The distances in the States make no sense to me, although the roads were kind of straight and seemingly neverending when driving through Russia as well, but at least there they went a bit uphill and downhill every now and then Have a friend who recently went to Colorado, it was also flat. And there were.... spikey things, what are they called. Cactuses... cactae... (latin plaural?) @____@
π: 0 β©: 1
MNat In reply to theOvercoat [2009-12-24 20:19:34 +0000 UTC]
Cacti! (arms) There were tumble-weeds rolling down the valley along the freeway. Occassional they would leap out into the road and people would dudge them madly. Or like me, run into them. They're just timble weeds, people!
I think its because the large portion of flat-lands used to have water over them many many thousands or millions of years ago. The whole mid-west portion of the us used to be an inlandsea! And half of my state used to be underwater at some point...(and one day it might be an island! That's so cool! )
And I think that if I had been a SERIOUS PHOTOGRAPHER(tm) I wouldve gotten a good shot..even if it killed me! x,x But I'm clearly not a photographer, am I?
π: 0 β©: 1
theOvercoat In reply to MNat [2009-12-27 20:50:04 +0000 UTC]
Tumble weeds!!! Seen them on TV, but they look so cool! I would prolly dodge them too, out of habit XDD Or maybe people do it for the sake of variation if the road is very boring, like, in summer.
Serious Photographers are sometimes too serious, they might not have thought a landscape was pretty or special at all! D8 Or they would indeed have died for it, so don't become one!!

I bet you saw this coming... his character design has all the elements of awesome ! We need action heroes like him thxplz. Hope to see more of him in the future.
It's not too blurry, but it must be eating up some details. Brand new scanners do that too -_-(with color rape thrown in!)Doesn't strong artificial light help (instead of sunlight)?
Heeeehe! Helloween . I love the keeper related songs! I've been listening to an absurd amount of Anubis Gate lately, this painting reminds me of their song Pyramids or even Shadow Gallery's 'Gold Dust'... These songs have been forcing me to draw something desert related too o_o.

MNat In reply to merriya [2009-12-20 08:28:25 +0000 UTC]
Ohohoho, Helloween certainly knows how to set a mood
My apartment is the land of perpetual night, so I have no strong artificial light! My instructors always talk about their studio set- ups for taking photos of their work, and they include hude lights, a wall painted bright white and a fancy camera. I have none of those! So, a fall-back plan is just taking the picture in natuarl light. It words much better that trying to use the camera flash or my dim, yellow bulb lamps..or that ONE florescent one on my desk...x.x
My scanner was always very loyal, actually, and scans colors wonderfully! The propblem is...my paintings nowadays are all too big for my tiny 8.5 by 14 inch scanner bed...x.x
Hm...I don't believe I've listened to anything by Anuuubis Gate. This required investigation! (dash)

merriya In reply to MNat [2009-12-21 06:09:25 +0000 UTC]
Heey, it looks darker (and sharper too?). Natural light is always the best, camera flash is the worst! ugh! I can't even take pics of people with it.
I'm gonna have to have a serious talk with my scanner now, or at least mess with it's settings more
Anubis Gate is evil, has enslaved my ears -_-.
And your sig... Yeah, forget him lady, he's taken! . Stormbringer induced screams those are
π: 0 β©: 1
MNat In reply to merriya [2009-12-21 07:02:58 +0000 UTC]
Indeed! Much sharper now. I hope the color change doesn't cause you woe. It really is much closer to the original now...
And alas, I couldnt really get into Anubis Gate! The singing style completely throws me off. He sounds almost 80's power metal but also modern at the same time...but I did enjoy Shadow Gallery They're pretty awesome.
Its a bucket full of laughs, the old Elric books. I think I'm reading the Stealer of Souls collection right now and it makes me laugh in public places (the train). Elric spontaneously bursting into tears at every opportunity? Awesome.

The colors look better too actually o_o, more contrast? Why didn't you post this first time around I guess I know why? I often have a hard time choosing between the scanned version and several photographed versions too... drives me nuts!
It's the opposite for me, I find his singing style strangely addictive (I generally like that blend of 80's power metal and modern) it's stuck in my head as I type D:. Shadow Gallery, yesh which songs did you like :3?
Been digging through my photobucket account, found something fitting [link] Hehehe ,bursting into tears, that needs to be drawn "Arioch... BAAAAAAAWWW!!!

Buahaha! Is that orange-headed dude supposed to be Moonglum? Is there a reason why he looks like he's offering himself for a hug? "Oh noes! Elric had a nightmare! Let's hug it out, man!" @.@ Also, Elric's bed-head: accident or eighties band throwback? You decide!
And I've listened to the Room V album and nothing else >.< But "Torn" is awesome, followed by "The Archer of Ben Salem" which is a totally weird song. It starts out sounding all medieval and old-timey and the longer the song goes on the more modern their conversation becomes, until theyre talking about blood plasma and bilogical warfare and the US special forces. Its so bizarre.

Yes, yes, that's Moonglum, hugs indeed, no way a gay artist's gonna draw awkward manly back pats! It's probably an eighties band throwback, he has the same hair throughout [link] (btw lady that's master, not mistress (sez Freud )). I like Elric's expression. "She knows o_o!!"
Oh, lookie what I found, another whiny dude! [link]
Oh yeah, SG's concept-album-ness . Wikipedia to the rescue [link] Torn. Need to listen to it nao! (I'm spamming your page, sorry!)

Who is the dude that drew this comic? It looks old-school, but at least its better looking than that other one I saw wherein Elric is built like an American comicbook super-hero....x.x Ridiculous, I say! That might also be the one where Yyrkoon is a tubby bald guy? I only saw a few scans and the covers. It was traumatixing enough...x.x
Oh yeah "mistress". Who are you kidding, lady? Its A SWORD.

merriya In reply to MNat [2009-12-21 10:27:45 +0000 UTC]
Bald yyrkoon and muscle-elric are from the elric: making of a sorcerer comics. the artwork just doesn't work with the authors ideas and writing style :/. I think P. Craig Russell's (that's the name of the guy) style looks much better, though his version of Yyrkoon is equally bad (if not worse). But the Stormbringer comics are nicely done you want (i have them in digital format *geekette*)?

A worse Yyrkoon? That hurts, dude. Right in my spleen. I didn't even think it was possible @,@ I always figured he was more like...Elric's non-albino twin cousin (hey, it happens in korean manga all the time it can surely happen here.x.x)They had matching swords 'n everything. Matching swords, sorry.
