I guess I'm not understanding how downward thrust is provided with the hug landing pads below the engineΒ

Concept is a bit similar to the Harrier or F-35, particularly the latter. Redirects airflow through ventral exhausts when entering a hover, and ingests cooling air through dorsal vents to prevent overheating. The Harrier had water for cooling, but this limited its ability to hover to about 90 seconds, whereas air cooling would allow for longer periods. This VTOL can also take off like a conventional aircraft using its wheels, while the pads are suitable for landing in soft terrain such as mud, snow or sand.Β

Basically functions as both a C-130 and CH-47 Chinook.
