Description This picture is a little old, I kind of forgot about it until now.

Last year, my neighbor had acquired a 10 month old female maltese from a family friend.
She also has a male maltese, and planned on mating the two. I was more than unhappy, especially because she said her reasoning behind breeding puppies was that she would use the money to pay for her sons' college fees.

During the summer, the female got pregnant. She was barely even a year old. I was incredibly angry because female dogs really shouldn't be bred until at LEAST 2 years of age. I was worried the poor dog would have complications like getting sick, or even DIE during the pregnancy. Thank God everything went alright...
She ended up having four puppies, two males and two females. The woman was selling them each at $1000!!! Of course, no one would buy them (I was secretly hoping no one would buy them so my neighbor would end up wasting food/vet bills/toys on four extra mouths) until she lowered their prices to $800. I still can't believe people would buy dogs that are SO unreasonably expensive. I got both of my dogs for $60 each, and I love them to bits.

So three of them sold, and she decided to keep the biggest male. I sure hope she doesn't use him to breed with the mom, because that would be disgusting. I also hope she doesn't breed the female for another year, or I WILL do something about it. I refuse to let my neighbor turn her house into a puppymill *grumbles* And I get frustrated with all these idiots who support backyard breedings because it just seems that when people tell them that they're killing wonderful animals at rescues and shelters, it goes in one ear and straight out the other.

Anyways, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this picture. It shows that these puppies are living, breathing creatures who deserve to be treated so, not like manufactured stuffed toys. When will people ever understand??

Why not do research and print out a list of why it's more healthy for her to get her dogs fixed? Or maybe talk to a local shelter and see if you can get numbers on how many they kill PER DAY at that shelter alone. I worked at a kill shelter, and fully support them. There's too many animals in this world because people are breeding them like this. Check my blog posts for some pics to show her. She can not guarantee the people that bought those puppies are good people, I got to see what happens when bad people get a hold of animals on a daily basis.

Yeah, backyard breeders are the #1 cause of overpopulation. And those morons who refuse to spay/neuter their dogs/cats because they don't want to alter their pet's appearance *gag*

I think they should make people pay for liscenses to breed and then have regular checks from the ASPCA.

Whoa, how did you find this? I'm watching Mochitora. Are you, too?

But yeah, totally! Breeding should be about producing the greatest dogs you can, so that they can perform services (like seeing eye dogs) or carry along excellent genes. I don't think people should breed just for money, or even to make pets; there are enough homeless dogs out there for that.

Wow, Mochi-love it!

I agree with you, people only care about the money even though they are putting other's life in jeopardy It's sad, the picture is very beautiful, I'm glad everything went alright!

I'm glad too! I was so worried about the female because she is way too young to be having pups.

gah people like that make me just so sad AND angry.

But I don't think 1000$ is really that much. The breed I'm getting usually costs over 1500€, which is almost like 2500 dollars. But I guess we europeans are just used to high prices in general.

^^ and very cute pic btw

I know "purebreeds" are usually higher priced than mutts, but seriously, they're both dogs to me. What i don't understand is why people buy dogs for so much when they can get equally great dogs for much less from shelters and/or rescues.

Zerahyahu In reply to Mochitora [2008-03-17 11:42:28 +0000 UTC]

true that. My aunt adopted a dog once and she still says that he was the best dog she has ever had. I was seriously considering a rescue dog first, but I came to the conclusion that it would be better for me to have my first dog from a breeder. A good breeder that is *thinks about your stupid neighbour*

Haha, that's a good idea. Make sure they have good references and can answer all your questions truthfully and don't look like they want to dump the puppy on you as quickly as possible XD

My two dogs right now are about as small as I'll go. I love them, but it would be nice to not have to bend over/kneel if I want to pet or play with them ^^

$800 ?!?

Yeah, that's stupid how she got the pup solely for mating it ..and another thing is that she wasn't even helping the breed out by being selective about temperaments or physicality or anything

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mochitora In reply to Vaiarc [2008-03-16 05:45:14 +0000 UTC]

I know!!! I once told her that most breeders breed dogs to increase the good points of the breed and not for money as a little hint meaning "You are stupid, don't breed those dogs", but you know what she said? "I'm not like most breeders then".
Just remembering that makes me fume >.<

This is such a sweet picture. And the lighting makes them look angelic.

Though, that story is both sad and a little disturbing. We've adopted our past 2 dogs, and then 1 a while ago. We've had 3 dobermans, one we bought from a breeder because my parents thought they might show her, but then decided not to and had her spayed (but, boy, she was a handful). Anyway, the doberman before her was a foster dog that refused to leave. He peed on my mom's leg once because he didn't want to go back to the rescue place. The doberman we have now we adopted from a dobe rescue about 3 years ago now, and she's one of the best dogs we've ever had (though very demanding). The third dog we had adopted was a greyhound, an x-racer. Those dogs certainly are something...beautiful and so funny. We could get him to start howling by howling ourselves, and he would bounce around and his ears would flop. Oh, I miss him so much. Anyway, my point is, you can never go wrong with rescue dogs, and what's so sad is that people, like your neighbor, breed for those reasons, get greedy with the money, and then those animals that need homes and need adopting can't get those homes. It's just such a brutal cycle.

Oh, and what kind of dogs do you have? I think I *should* know, but I can't remember...and sorry for the long comment

Mochitora In reply to SilverFlameWanderer [2008-03-16 05:42:23 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't apologize, I love hearing about peoples' dogs ^^ My dogs are both poodle mixes. I have no idea what the other part(s) is/are though.

Exactly. It's just so frustrating when people won't take the time to look up a good rescue or shelter and adopt instead of buying puppies that are most likely sick and overpriced at petstores.

On the other hand. This picture is adorable!!!!
