Description I wanted to take some photos of ants for ages already, but they are fast little creatures.
I caught some drinking today.
It was really great fun taking these photos.

Im not sure if this is four or five times magnification. One or the other anyway. Taken with canon Eos 400D and the Mp-e 65mm lens.
I used the standard camera flash and a white paper to reflect it.

I hope Ill get another chance, another day, to take more photos of ants. There is still loads that needs improving...

A wonderfully thought-up piece - you can see such great detail upon the ant.
I was instantly drawn into the image simply by the smoothness and softness of the lighting. Using the in-built flash on any camera is a bad idea, but deciding to bounce it was a stroke of Genius! (Must've been quite hard to set up.)
However, I must penalise you for use of ISO 400 when you are getting a shutter speed of 125th of a second approx!
The full-size image ends up slightly grainy as such, which is a real shame.
The fold in the water and specs of dirt make the ant seem so incredibly small. Something which, I suppose it was.
A fully-in-focus any would have been nice to see too, as the depth of field is a little small. The aperture could have been changed by one or two stops without causing too much worry with 400 ISO. It's either grain or detail, unless you change the set-up to incorporate more flash or soft lighting.
Wonderful shot. I look forward to seeing more like this from you.

Oh thank you really a lot for the critique. It is the first one I recieve, so I am even more happier

It is a little sad, that I dont have any other flash than the standard one of my camera, so I dont really have any choice there.
But your right, I could've set the ISO to 200 and a little longer shutter speed. As the ant didnt move to much while drinking that wouldnt have mattered at all.

I planed to do some more shots soon, probably tomorrow, and then I'll try and use your advice.
And of course I shall work on the foucs a little more

Thank you again!

No problem~ I don't have a flash either as I hardly ever need such a thing!
There's almost always more than one way around things!
Keep working hard and be the best you can be!

Amazing masterpiece. Great magnification, I can't get so much zoom with my raynox converter and anyway, on full zoom it's hard to make object well focused for me as I've got very low focus-range. Did you use tripod? Can you give me some advices?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moepling In reply to joesqsek [2009-05-03 19:31:14 +0000 UTC]

Well I am a lucky owned of the Canon Mp-e 65mm lens, which is porbably the best macro lens at the moment. Without this I could never have made this shot.

However... for this shot I didnt use a tripod, actually I use a tripod very seldom. I am just much more flexible without. Especially with moving objects I find a tripod more in my way then helpful.
As this was my first shot with ants, I cant say too much, but for example with bees, I have learned that it helps a lot at the beginning to get them still. A good way to do this is to put some honey out (near a place where bees always fly around) and wait a while. Then you sometimes get up to 10 minutes where the bee isnt flying about

The other thing is the light. As I dont have a flash, other than my standard camera one, I usually dont have enough light for good macro shots. So I take white paper with me and try and put this behind, over or next (whatever direction I want to lighten up) to the object which I want to take a photo from.
I think that helps a great deal with macro shots.

I hope this helps a bit, if you ever have any more questions, just ask me

Now still thank you Im really glad you like the photo
