Well all things coincidered that was a pretty damn good start to season three. The animation was better then ever (seriously, thats done on flash!) the characterization was some of the best in the whole show, every pony did what they do best, the songs were cute with 'Ballad of the crystal ponies' being so damn catchy and the background music was epic level.Only problem with most bronies, including myself, being that the new villian King Sombra had NO screen time what so ever, let alone characterization. Thats a shame as MLP has a decent set of villians, Nightmare Moon was fairly simple overall but got better as Luna got more development, Discord owned every scene he was in and Chrysalis kept you guessing right up to the end. Still, given the amount of forshadowing in this ep via Celestia (whats in the book?) hopefully we'll see a return from Sombra with abit more back story to help flesh him out. It shouldn't be to hard, he's basically Sauron/Arthas!
Anyways, the pic was fun. I wanted to go for a old school tyrant look so changed him up abit, hope you all get a kick out of it. Now back to requests.

A little bit, but from one scene in Mulan where after they sang "a girl were fighting for." They saw a burned down village, and that's why it kinda reminded me of Mulan.

It usually looks extremely awkward to take anypony and draw them not-cute or too realistic. With Sombra, however, it works perfectly and makes him about a gazillion times more evil. That pic really kicks ass, and all those tiny awesome details...! Great job!!!

Funnily enough, King Sombra's my favorite MLP villain. We got all we needed about him from his actions and the fear his mere mention inspired in the crystal ponies.
Plus, he was such a dang effective villain, securing the crystal heart in a way no crystal pony, of which there are no unicorns or pegasi, could get to. The only reason he lost was because Spike at first let Twilight go down those stairs on her own before coming after her. If Spike had actually gone with her he would have been caught by the Greatest Fear door at the same time and there wouldn't have been anyone around to snap them out of it.
Also, something about the way he licked his lips while rising to catch Spike and the crystal heart at the end just creeped me out. >.>

I'm curious, what about the animation DID you like? I was appalled by how riddled with errors both parts of The Crystal Empire were (disappearing ears, eyes overlapping snouts, ponies not lining up with the ground's angle, etc). Normally I love FIM's animation so that was a major disappointment for me.
(Very nice picture btw, I just have yet to find anyone who's complimented the TCE's animation and can tell me what was [i]good[/i] about it!)

It just 'moved' really well and thats everything in animation. So many shows focus on the details and it just doesnt work (looking at your Transformers), MLP has such fluid movement. Twilight dancing during her song was lovely if a little stretchy. The little ticks in the show, hair flips, springy-ness, etc and even the general walk animations just look right. Sure every now and then a lil'mistake is made and if you notice it it can jar you out of the experience but MLP just seems so natural I don't mind... and anyways the errors resulted in Derpy so ssssssh!

I didn't notice anything "moving" any more than it always has... I mean, the horse runs/etc have always been there and gorgeous, their pupils tend to dilate correctly (e.g. when Discord turns it suddenly to night) and in ACW they had a swallowing animation for when Twilight drank through a straw.
And I'm not the type to normally notice errors, this may be the first time I've spotted any on the first watch of a cartoon, and I saw a lot...

Well thats fair play, im not arguing the past animation was worse, it just looked really good to me. As I said the newer movements in Twilights song really hit me in a good place so maybe im just rambling.

Don't forget the fact that his horn is seen to have survived as well. Chances are that we will soon see the rebirth of King Sombra and then he'll show everyone how truly badass he is.

Yeah I know what you mean. Sombra had an awesome design and could use the power of fear. Shame they didn't develop him as much as they did with Discord. We didn't even see him talk that much.

No screen time, it seems all to likely he'll make a return so hopefully he'll become something amazing.
