Well all things coincidered that was a pretty damn good start to season three. The animation was better then ever (seriously, thats done on flash!) the characterization was some of the best in the whole show, every pony did what they do best, the songs were cute with 'Ballad of the crystal ponies' being so damn catchy and the background music was epic level.Only problem with most bronies, including myself, being that the new villian King Sombra had NO screen time what so ever, let alone characterization. Thats a shame as MLP has a decent set of villians, Nightmare Moon was fairly simple overall but got better as Luna got more development, Discord owned every scene he was in and Chrysalis kept you guessing right up to the end. Still, given the amount of forshadowing in this ep via Celestia (whats in the book?) hopefully we'll see a return from Sombra with abit more back story to help flesh him out. It shouldn't be to hard, he's basically Sauron/Arthas!
Anyways, the pic was fun. I wanted to go for a old school tyrant look so changed him up abit, hope you all get a kick out of it. Now back to requests.

Think of it like this: He IS Pony Sauron, just around Lord of the Rings Trilogy-era. What we saw in the flashback was him as Sauron before Sauron was defeated by the Elves and Men. King Sombra was Dangerously Genre Savy enough to 1.) Hide away the only object that could hurt him, 2.) Hide it beyond traps that only another magic user (in a land of Earth Ponies like the Crystal Empire) could even HOPE to try and get through, and 3.) Completely demoralize and break the Crystal Ponies, the POWER SOURCE of the Crystal Heart, thus making it useless against him.
If Sombra was smart enough to do all that, is it any wonder that he didn’t talk that much? He knew that if he stopped to gloat or monologue, he would be giving his enemies valuable time to think of a way to beat him. A mistake that BOTH Discord and Chrysalis made. Instead, Sombra quickly and decisively acted to regain control of the empire, never giving Twilight and the others a chance to get a lucky shot in while he was busy bantering.
Although this? This picture right here? This makes Sombra look like a villain from The Last Unicorn, or another Rankin-Bass animated film like it.

I never really saw works from Rankin-Bass but peeps always bring up The Last Unicorn, were they good?
Also, I agree's on the stuff you said. His intro on the ice feilds was damn good, the whale noises really made him other worldly.

Wow . . . now THIS is how Sombra should have appeared! 
I know it's basically a riff on the Sauron armor, but it's still wicked cool. And yes, I'll echo what every brony from here to Bangkok is saying: Sombra had too little characterization. He was built up to be the ultimate badass, and instead we got five minutes of "SLAVES!" and "Mmmm, Crystal!". I'm hoping he turns out to be a recurring villain, not every other episode, but someone who would serve as a world-endangering problem that crops up from time to time, sort of like the Borg from Star Trek (and here's hoping they don't castrate him like Berman and Braga did with the Borg).

His voice actor sounded fairly good, hope he gets more of a chance to flex his mouth muscles.

I myself was rather let down initially at Sombra's low number of appearances, but when the Sauron comparison came to mind, I realised that that was part of the point of his character. I mean, Sauron himself didn't receive a great deal of characterisation in the Lord Of The Rings. Sauron himself NEVER appeared in the original LOTR novel, actually.

I am campaigning across Bronydom to explain the view that Sombra was like Sauron. They both were badass, physical bodies in the flashbacks and were turned into shadow forms and manipulated events. The protaganists raced against time to find/destroy a object of power before They could return and cover the world in darkness.

True but Sauron HAD a back story. It just wasn't in the books, not to mention he had alot more presence what with a army, several fortress' and a tower with a stonking great flaming eye on it. Sombra wasn't so much under developed but given no time to develope at all. He had about 5 mins on screen time and although his presence was very much there with only 40 mins to explain the crystal ponies and how Twilight was going to sort out this mess it became more about her then Sombra. Again, hopefully he'll get some more screen time.

Beyond the usual thoughts about him, for various reasons I want his horn to return as a wand. If anything he is still the 1st or 2nd most powerful mortal magic user we have seen.

Somehow, I think this season is going to have more to do with Sombra than just the first two episodes. With all that weird shadow magic that Twilight and Celestia were casting, it seems like an unresolved conflict.
