Description

Woop woop, here's another non-Touhou fanart! This one was created April last year, so we're getting close to my current catalog.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica holds a special place in my heart. It's a grim dark magical girl anime with really cool art. For example, the magical girls fight against witches, which is portrayed with different art aesthetics (usually cut out collages, but that's an oversimplify imo). If you don't mind depressing, existential, or dark themes, I highly recommend watching the anime for the "artsy" parts.

Anyways, Homura is my favorite character. She's a jaded character, to say the least, and has a tragic past that justifies that jadedness. You can really see and (maybe) understand her development and head space, especially when she fell deep into depression, which is shown wonderfully in the Rebellion movie.

This fanart is kind off a mash of two scenes relating to Homura. In both of the scenes, Homura is shown to changed from her innocent self to a more stone-faced cynical person. But underneath, she is distraught and suffering, but shelved it to be more focused on her goals. Well, there's more to it but that's spoilers for a great show   That said, this picture isn't the most accurate to the original scenes. I actually toned down the background color, which was originally sky blue, because otherwise it ruins the mood I was aiming for haha.

This time, I experiment with soft shading a lot more. I even reduced the hair details that I usually do to try using soft shading for it instead. While the end result looks nice, it's not something i would use a lot in future projects Nothing against soft shading in particular, I just prefer the sharpness of cell shading, it makes things look more solid. I'll probably just limit soft shading to clothing and skin in the future.

One thing that I'm most dissatisfied about is the facial expression. I wanted to draw a subtle "hold in the pain" face, that also looks like a stoic face from afar. I don't know what about it exactly, but I don't think I quite captured that. Of course, I could just redo the face over and over, but I thought to let go of it, otherwise I'd just obsess over it and never finish the fanart.

Other than that, maybe the pose is a bit stiff? At least it looks a lot stiffer than my previous drawings. I tried using real-life references this time, but I think I followed it too much and Homura looks kind of stiff now. I'll have to be more careful with using references in the future.

Overall, I'm quite happy how the fanart turned out. I got to draw a character that I like and learned more about soft shading. Win-win.
