Am I right in thinking that old Starbuck is winning? Kara doesn't look particuarly happy.

He's got more chips than she does, but I drew the funny-shaped cards they used in the original show when they played Pyramid, which means they should be playing for those little gold bars they used as currency. Erm... I'm not sure who's winning - should have done it as a game of strip poker - that way everyone wins.

From what little I've seen of the two Battlestar shows, I'd say those are exactly the expressions Starbuck and Starbuck would have if they met each other; the first was a spacepimp, and the second had a temper. "What're you looking at, pig?" "Boooobies!"
So...did you draw this up all yourself, or take photos from the shows and perfect them with computer art, or what? This picture is cool.

Spacepimp Starbuck rocks! I got lucky with Dirk Benedict's likeness, but Katee Sackhoff proved a bit more problematic - although the likeness is passable if you squint your eyes up and kinda pretend...
Mostly, this was just scribbles, but cleaned up in CS and then inked (several times) until it looked halfway like the characters. At which point you walk away before you ruin it by tweaking the little bits and bobs you think you've got wrong.
And everything looks better with lens flares - I don't care what the art-Pope says.

Thanks!
The background was actually changed at the editor's request - it was originally just the bar from the old show, but he wanted something a bit more apocalyptic to go with the theme of the magazine article.

And the theme of that article was "Starbuck vs Starbuck" I presume

Actually, it was a critical appraisal of the pilot episode (which was then a tv mini-series) in relation to how it portrayed an apocalyptic event compared to the original series' pilot episode/mini-series/theatrical release movie. I was more in favour of the original series, as despite dating badly, it at least had a clear idea of what it was doing, and presented Starbuck with a clearly-defined character - as opposed to the new series not quite knowing what to do with Starbuck beyond the sci-fi cliche of updating a franchise by making a character a woman in the new version.
I've seen every episode of the show, and just this evening watched the episode where Starbuck died because she went for a drive or something, and had issues with her mom. A poor send-off for a poor character, but it's done now.

Thank you for the clarification.
I don't want to get into yet another argument about the virtues of the old series vs the remake. Suffice to say, I prefer the remake, though I can appreciate the original for being an light-hearted, decisively pulpy adventure that it is.
One thing that initially attracted to your piece was that you seemed to appreciate both characters equally, without picking sides. Shows what I know *shrugs*

No, I like the remake fine, I just think the original had a more coherent identity from the outset - the benefit of being packed with stock characters, I suppose. It had it's backstory in place as of episode one, whereas the new series has to make it up as they go out of necessity - not knowing how many episodes you have left to tell a story, or if you're getting renewed next season, can have a detrimental effect on arc-driven plots. I didn't think much of the miniseries that started the new series off, but the first season of the show was a great improvement on it - the episode '33' especially. It just seems to have trailed off in the third season after the New Caprica stuff.
Never be afraid to offer criticism about shows you like - especially if you're writing a critical article about them. Editors hate puff-pieces.

Fair enough. Heck, it's even something I can sort of get behind.

that's cool! I really like how the background contrasts with the main images.
