Love this map!Β
1) Would you mind if I used this for a homebrew D&D campaign I'm running and
2) Do you have an unlabeled one, by chance?

I have seen many amazing maps on this cite, but this is by far the most stunning and visually appealing one yet!
Everything looks absolutely authentic and even though there is a lot going on in terms of design it is still very easy to follow.
May I ask what program you used?

That's good of you to say. This was done back in the days of Paintshop Pro (7 I think) when it was still owned by JASC and before I owned a tablet!

Hi, I can send you a digital version of the map at full res, on the understanding that it is just for a one off poster for your personal use. It's too big for an e-mail attachment so if you have a dropbox account or something let me know and I'll forward it to you.

Dude... why does everyone make this mistake?
Go toΒ maptoglobe.bitbucket.org/ and put your map on a globe. Your arctic region is fucked.

I would love to see a workflow break down on this. How did you get they amazing detail to the terrain. Did you by any chance use WorldMachine?

I started by blocking out the shapes of the continents. Then the textures involve about 30% cloning from various sources and then painting over that so that you're completely in control of the position of rivers, valleys etc. Once the painting is done I just went over areas with the burn tool at a very light setting to give emphasis to the lines. At least that's what I think I remember doing!

Something I've been wondering about; is Theia actually Earth in a vastly different time period? Things seem to correspond with Earth's current continents somewhat, with Kathos being in Asia, Denus being the Arabian Peninsula, Taetus being Greenland, Seryon being Japan and so on.

I think Theia is meant to be a lot bigger than Earth, but with enough hints at our own planet to make it seem like a real/natural setting. Maybe if the Earth took on more mass in the future (somehow)it would become Theia??

I read on the site that the planet Theia is an alien planet, just very much like earth. It's star was formed in the cloud of a supernova so the planet has an ton of heavy elements like iron, leading to a much earlier industrialization than earth. Also, it atmosphere is super dense with a 20% argon content, witch is how those big metal zeppelins can take off.

these are nice ideas!
is iron grip an existing rollgame or pen and paper or did you make the world up for yourself?

I don't know what Iron Grip is but I love this. It's awesome! I love the natural feel of the landmasses and the texture. Did you use photo references for the textures?

Monkey-Paw In reply to Calcaneus [2011-02-03 09:14:14 +0000 UTC]

They were handpainted, then messed around with a bit, then retouched - once I had finished about two thirds of a continent I had all the necessary types of terrain and just cloned the stuff I had and applied it to the rest of the map.

Very cool, working on something similar, but going for a more Tolkien look on the map.
