Nei and Neifirst, from Phantasy Star II. Nei and Neifirst are "twins", products of a genetic experience that consisted of mixing genes from biomonsters and humans - that´s how they got their pointy ears. Neifirst is the "evil" twin, and Nei the good one. Nei was one of the main characters in the first part of the game, and one of the most dramatic scenes was when they had to fight against each other.

This sketch was originally only a test for Nei's pose (on the left). On that same page there are a lot of simple studies of how the arms, her hand, and the line of the shoulders should be. Yet, her left arm doesn´t seem right. I had to erase her butt several times, because every time, it looked too "brazilian" for her :^P Neifirst is on the right, dodging Nei's attack, and preparing to slash her with her sword. I like this pose because I can see the next frames needed to make it animated. I don´t know why she had a sword if she was suposedly projected to attack with claws or something, like Nei does. Niefirst's original design vary, so I choosed to make her to look as similar to Nei as possible, since they were twins anyway.

It´s fun to draw Nei because her original design consists only of boots, sleeves, a collar, and a swim suit. It´s fun to explore shapes and volume, to get the right places for each movement without annoying clothes covering hips, arms and legs. I still have to work out the torso, it´s always too rigid, it´s hard to make any character to bend down or turn around, like can be seen on this picture with both characters. That´s why I like to create my own characters wearing a full (and rigid) body armor to avoid these problems :^P
