I love how CLEAR the storytelling is. Many film buffs I know like to complain that it makes the movie predictable, but I like when you can point out visual clues that tell us something about the story in advance, and Shape Of Water is full of that.

yeah, true - there are a lot of stereotypes and clichΓ©s too,
but as you mentioned, it fits the overall tonality and what it
wants to be. its a great movie.

Oh? Of all the words I could think of to describe this picture, "badass" wasn't one of them, so that's interesting. Any particular reason for that?

The gleam in the eyes, and the water effects that make it look wet, and those markings on it's head! Β Just the way you drew it up is bad ass

The movie was sweet and awesome, something that we don't see a lot these days.

Indeed. I usually roll my eyes at a romance movie. But that's not because I have anything against romance in particular, its just badly written 99% of the time. This one was not. I kind of love the fact that we can savely say the best romance of the 2010s was a romance between a mute and a fish guy, so that's worth an oscar already. xD

This reminds me soooo much of the old X-COM: Terror from the Deep artworks
But I'm afraid you might be a bit too young to know this game. Still a very nice job awakening my old memories. Thanks for that.

Oh? That's interesting, how did you catch wind of my artwork? I don't have a feeling for the way my art interacts with the internet beyond just deviantart, tumblr and maybe instagram where I'm active.

I think I found your work via someone on Pinterest. Perhaps they put it in their public favorites and your signature was there. But I think I found it either through that, FB, or The WyvernsWeaverβs page, since they posted your Sunderance teaser. I liked how original you draw and the way you capture realistic poses and storytelling so I watched you and a few others weeeell before making this account, and then eventually wanted to make art, too!

You found me via pinterest? Guess the site isn't as useless as I thought for exposure. Facebook? Now there I really am not that active. So other people posting my stuff again? I am really clueless when it comes to my own artwork being scattered across the internet xP

Qalcove In reply to MonoFlax [2018-03-03 22:34:09 +0000 UTC]
It definitely wasnβt your account - Iβve seen your work, particularly Nirlock, posted more than a few times on both sites. In almost all cases I found people from others posting it and [sometimes] crediting the author. I didnβt find out you made Nirlock for awhile since the original poster didnβt credit you. -_-

Yeah, that sucks. But as long as they're not making money it doesn't irk me as much. I had cases like this before. Youtube channels with monetization getting thousands of views off of my work. Though I am glad you found me in the end!

The story and cinematography is really top quality.Β I feel that Elisa was really a female version of the sea creature that somehow adapted to live on land but lost her memories.Β Those scars on her neck perfectly matching the gills that appear later don't match any other explanations I can come up with.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
MonoFlax In reply to kngru [2018-02-17 17:00:34 +0000 UTC]
I heard a theory once that she fell into a river as a child and was saved by a similar creature to charley by giving her gills to breathe. Either way, its very likely to me that when they found her by the river, they saw her gills and sewed them shut thinking they were wounds. That's why the kiss at the end works. Its just charley's healing ability working on her sewed gills.
π: 0 β©: 1
kngru In reply to MonoFlax [2018-02-17 22:56:36 +0000 UTC]
It's certainly a plausible theory though convoluted.Β Due to the fact that she dreams of water and has such an affinity towards it and the fact that she can't talk (because she never developed vocal chords like a human, I still lean towards her being a female version of the sea creature.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
MonoFlax In reply to kngru [2018-02-19 20:24:37 +0000 UTC]
Well either way I think it makes sense that the scars were gills to begin with and the kiss heals the actual damage that was caused by sewing them shut. Ironically thinking they would fix things. Somehow that also seems like it plays into the movie's overall themes... Misunderstanding the unknown, the other, and superimposing the own values on it? idk, thoughts? xD

I guess we'll never know for sure unless they make a prequel explaining where the two lovers came from.Β There's much mystery to be unraveled.

MonoFlax In reply to kngru [2018-02-22 23:27:15 +0000 UTC]
Oh god I hope they don't try to "expand" this story, for me its fine as it is. And the movie is just a bit too... artsy? To be made into anything resembling a franchise. Thankfully the movie wasn't super successful. Like, it was a success, it made thrice its budget, but then again, the budget was only 19 million dollars so they didn't even hit 100million in the box office.Β

kngru In reply to MonoFlax [2018-02-23 02:49:33 +0000 UTC]
I too feel it was fine as it is but I can't help but want to know more about the two main characters' pasts.

MonoFlax In reply to kngru [2018-03-03 17:20:31 +0000 UTC]
I think there's actually a novel out there as an appendage to the movie, but in this case it seems like the writer actually had a say in the story Guillermo wanted to tell and the two worked closely together on it. So it might be worth checking out if you're starved for more content. The novel seems to be going more into detail on Eliza's past and motivations, and apparently there's even chapters written from Charlie's perspective!
