Description
Saw an awesome render by tarch on tumblr and felt like I had to repaint it!The left wing makes no sense and I caught up to it too late, just ignore that heheh
This is a mixed media "illustration" - I drew a traditional sketch with pencil, then scanned it and colored it digitally with some added effects. The general sense of texture comes partly from a high pass filter and partly from the texture of the actual drawing. I also added noise and blur effects

I like this drawing of yours. It contains some exquisite details and transfers the impact of a fast dragon ride to the viewer. Well, at least to me. I think the effects of blurring and an individual soft focus do a good job in here. The cloudy background also adds some nice layer of elusive speed to the overall picture. What got me on this drawing is this ocean, as it reflects the light and also has a nicely done color change of grayish blue. The swarm-like pixels between the whiteish and blueish parts remind me of the dancing reflections you can see on the water when the sun comes up or goes down near the coast.
The facial expression of Hiccup is well done, as it shows a slice of surprise toward whatever might be behind him and his dragon. As this "pursuer" is not shown on the drawing itself, it gives some interesting questions to think about. I assume that even a Nightfury can be caught, as speed is not always the best ally to have. So this chase might be a fascinating one.
Unfortunately, I can't say much about the techniques you used. I'm not an artist, just some guy who likes drawings. I can say what I like and what I not like, but for me, it is hard to make a difference how the technique could have an impact on what I like or not. I can only tell what my gut instincts tell me. For example, I don't like the red tail of Toothless here, because the blurring effect looks different from the blurring you used elsewhere in the picture. The fluke looks a bit like it had been printed with an old less-dpi bubble-jet printer, as it looks like large pixels added together. The blurring on the rest of the drawing looks more smooth and soft in a way. Hmm, but that's only my opinion, of course. I guess such a small detail will never have much of a negative influence on the overall picture. Maybe this little thingy could be solved by adjusting the blur effect. Just a suggestion, of course. No need to do that, as the drawing is still excellent in my opinion. It catches some sweet emotions and transfers them well.
It is very likable how you capture the style of HTTYD, so I hope to see more of that e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="

Very well done! This picture was artfully drawn and beautifully painted, resembling more of a professional work of art rather than a fan drawing. The expression on Hiccup's face is very striking: fearful, yet alert, making us, the audience, care more about what might be going on. And by not showing the threat, we are more afraid of what's coming for our heroes and hope for them to make it out. I especially love the work on the sea, the way it is drawn and colored to sparkle and shimmer. I look forward to seeing more of this in the future!

Thank you for this critique! I was going for capturing the exhiliration he feels whenever he flies with toothless. Always one of the best things about the movies was how they managed to do that.

I completely agree! Aside from the flying scenes, I just love it when Hiccup and Toothless are together!

Yeah! Their mutual bond is just really well displayed in the way they behave together, be it in the air or on the ground.

Wow! This color balance and lighting- it feels very realistic and easy to look at. The direction lines from the horizon to Hiccup and Toothless's back is very nicely done. very theatrical too!

Thank you! I was certainly going for a more cinematic look - hence the black bars too :3

Woah, this is just great!! I really love the "sketch"-feel of the lineart!
The smart placement of the blur-effect makes the piece really seem to be... Alive? Action-packed! I love it °<°

Thanks! The lineart feels sketchy because it actually is a traditional pencil sketch I used I like scanning and working with traditional sketches, as I am not comfortable enough with digital drawing yet.

I really like it... but I have a question... which Dragon can run fast enough to catch toothless? Beside another nightfurry of course!

WELL... Yeah the title doesn't really make sense. Didn't think too much about it either. I just wanted something more expressive than "Tarch render screenshot repaint thing" xD

The intensity of this picture is really captured in the angle, and the blurring effect definitely makes it show their speed and helps us imagine they're flying. I love it, I would love to add a critique but I imagine someone could probably mention more than I could at the moment. I am at work and can't be here for too long. In all, you did a magnificent job!

True, but a critique of a novice is nothing compared to the critique of a master.
