Description
Being unoriginal again. This time I saw this beautiful piece here over on tumblr (charlieslowartsies.tumblr.com/β¦ ) ( on devianArt) All credits for the idea and composition belong to them^^ That said, I really love how this one turned Β out. Might be a bit too much bloom but it looks cool to me^^ Toothless is also quite imposing, Never managed that as well before.Related content

Thank you! A lot of people seem to agree with you since its my most popular piece, but I don't like it that much honestly. Didn't age that well compared to some of my other work. Might redo it at some point.

You're very welcome! I didn't realize it was your most popular piece until I checked your gallery. It looks great IMO, but if you think a redo will work, go for it. Keep thinking forward... Β Β Β Β

Thank you! I was actually rather surprized at how popular this one is with you guys. It's already my second most faved picture after TWO DAYS, and usually whenever I uploaded httyd art the response was always average or below average, maybe people lost interest in httyd because we are on hiatus atm, or they lost interest in my art because I didn't do that much httyd recently. Whatever it is, I am glad this one is doing so well now

I came to say this is an amazing work, just like I always do because I really enjoy your art.
Then I saw the comments and I really don't understand how there's people who says you must take this down from here.
I was going to say a lot of stuff about what I think, but you said it all in your reply to the artist of the original piece.
You did an excellent work, you took an idea and you made it new and fresh, all with your talent and experience.
I completely agree with you on everything.
Keep being so honest and humble. I'm a really big fan of yours and your art inspires me lots!!!

Thanks so much for caring! I read this yesterday already and it made me feel somewhat relieved because there was always this shade of a doubt that maybe I actually did something bad here Q_Q By now the owner of the original clarified that they don't want me to take it down (*phew*), they are very responsive which is awesome, many artists just tend to be rather choleric when it comes to their idea (and they are entitled to it of course, it's THEIR work) Was just one very eager commenter who thought they knew what they were talking about.Β

Woah there, no need to be so aggressive.
For starters, they never demanded that I take it down. Secondly, if they do indeed demand that I take it down, I will discuss that with them. I am counting on their reasonability then. Finally, I simply don't see where you have a say in that discussion. Conclusion: This is a matter between me and CharlieMcCarthey, and I don't want any bad blood with them, or anyone else. Thanks for understanding.

Hey! I'm the original artist here--CharlieMcarthy on tumblr, Charlieslowartsies for my art blog--and while I'm touched my work was something you wanted to recreate/study, you did not ask for my permission.
I do not mind copying to learn but I DO mind not being asked to use my work, as well as uploading it.
π: 0 β©: 1
MonoFlax In reply to CharlieMcarthy [2016-11-15 19:05:36 +0000 UTC]
Hey there! Let me begin by thanking you for being so inspiring! Your picture was incredible, I just love how you managed to capture what makes a Night Fury so majestic while also retaining this "morbid curiosity" aspect of his character.Β
Now I usually ask for permission. I made a mistake, and I apologize for it. The reason is that tumblr has always seemed less intimate to me than deviantArt. I simply do not know how I would go about asking someone for permission via tumblr. My mistake was that I didn't look more into the source of the picture. I propably would've found you on dA, I propably would've noted you here asking for permission. That was my mistake.
Now with that being said, the only things I adopted were your idea for a scene and the pose for Toothless, although I altered that one significantly, too, to fit my style of drawing better. I literally did everything else from scratch. It was very difficult for me since I am a noob in digital painting, and it took two days from start to finish. I am incredibly proud of the result. I stilll credited you in the description and expressed my aknowledgement towards the source of the idea, by saying I was "being unoriginal" and I literally credited you for idea and composition after that.Β Your claims would apply if I had taken your very picture, lazily altered it and then reuploaded it. In that case they would also still apply if I hadn't asked for your permission, which I haven't. But that is not what I did. Saying that I "copied" your work disregards the process of me looking at reference for the background, for Hiccups color pattern, for the parts where Toothless's scales are placed, for where his wings' joints are positioned relative to the joints of his front legs, etc. I did all that.
Now, I can't really undo not asking you for permission in the first place. What I can do is asking you now not to demand me taking it down now. Apart from my work easily falling under the terms of fair use if you want to be legal, A lot of people here seem to have enjoyed the picture (it's already one of my most popular pieces after merely two days!). As a result, most of them will see the link back to your piece. I really hope we can be reasonable and logical about this issue, there's no need for us to fight.Β

CharlieMcarthy In reply to MonoFlax [2016-11-16 06:50:14 +0000 UTC]
I can understand tumblr being less intimate--funnily enough, I see DA as being less intimate, which I think just kinda boils down to opinion. None of my current HTTYD work is on here, and I'm sure I won't get around to posting it anytime soon. (It's all a mess anyway, the piece you referenced was a dirty 35 min. warm up. At first I screeched in agony someone used it as a reference. >>; )
Second, and for future reference, it is still someone's art. Because the tumblr messaging system is incredibly unreliable (ie, sometimes we don't get messages) I highly suggest using the tumblr IM system next time. The IM's never fail to send, and you can even send links. Thirdly, you're right, I'm not asking you to take it down. And I don't plan to, because it IS more a study. It is NOT a straight duplicate, no, and when I said 'copying to learn,' that's what I meant. (Er, less me saying 'you copied it' and more saying 'you studied it and redrew to learn, while also disregarding certain bits. Like Hic's pose. The textures I used, etc.' I used a term I was used to, sorry if that came off aggressive, or accusatory.) Copying to learn is something I did in at college for several years--sat in museums and sketched from old masters and what not. So I can usually tell when something is studied versus traced, etc.
Annnd finally: I VERY much appreciate your apology. I've had several artists ACTUALLY steal over the years AND be jerks about it....its left a bad taste in my mouth. You did neither of these things, like ohmygod thank you for being mature. I gain one year of my life back ever ytime someone asks, or apologizes later. To me, that makes you a powerful artist more than anything you can ever make, because it's about attitude. So thank you!!
Now down to the fun part, because HTTYD and art /claps hands together.Β You said you're new at digital art? What parts are you new to? What programs do you use? Favorite brushes? I'm digging the warm tone you gave Toothy--mostly bc I NEVER do that and whenever I see another artist give him warm shades I always dig it and go 'I should try that next time!' But I never effing do because frankly I do not like how I handle color. I sort of think the rocks in the far background are a little...soft? If that makes sense? While the roots of the tree also in the bg--to the far left---are rendered super damn nice.

Oh my GOD thanks for being so reasonable! This issue actually had me worried you know, I am not usually involved in copyright issues. As I said, I usually do ask for permission. As for your advice about messaging on tumblr, that's really helpful, I might actually start to be more social over there now Β
Your comment did not come across as agressive, that's just me making extra sure I am making my point clear. Many MANY issues on the internet derive from ambiguity and someone just NOT GETTING what someone else means, I wanted to be extra clear on that point. So, it's not about you specifically but the general nature of the situation.
Also, I heard stories about people who had a few serious problems with individuals who actually did steel their artwork and were rude about it then. I actually imagined you might have had experience with art theft when I read your comment.Β
As for the fun part: I use Krita, which is as awesome as it is free to use, I really like that program by now. It's not that famous though, so not a lot of people are making brushes for it. I got my tablet for my birthday, that was ten months ago, I never had never done digital art before. Though I think I have actually improved mostly in the last month or so. As a beginner, I am mainly trying things out at the moment. I have a very specific drawing style which I have put a lot of thought and a LOT of practise into. My main goal now is to use the benifits of digital art while also retaining what makes my style so special when I convert it to digital. I have recently started a very simple approach. Used a very simple textureless brush that changes in size with pen pressure for most of the coloring and the lines. Tried to get values by changing opacities. Having a lot of fun with opacities mainly atm xD Then I used an airbrush for the bloom AND the shadows, which might be a bit weird but Idunnow. I also didn't think about lighting a lot, it does work somehow, but I'd rather be more proficient in that area in general. The background you are whitnessing here is the very first I have ever done digitally xD So I basically had no idea what I was doing most of the time. Used some kind smudge brush with texture for the reflections in the water, that turned out really good imo.
