"Wait for me, alright? I'll come back and we'll find somewhere safer, okay? I will come back," Damien told his younger brother before leaving. Nico waited for the day his brother would return, but it never came. Those walking corpses forced him to leave. He scavenged what ever seemed useful and could fit into his messenger bag, and he left. For a while he was on his own, setting traps near his little camp and killing any dead that came close.Β
In that time alone, he relived the events that led up to this. He was at home with his brother, Damien, his mother was at the market getting groceries for dinner, and he didn't have a father to remember. The brothers were in the living room just sitting and talking when the phone rang. He remembered Damien's reaction to the phone call from their mother. The pale face, wide eyes, shaky voice... it scared Nico to see his brother that way.Β Nico could barley hear his mother's rasping, pained voice as she sobbed apologies and farewells before the call hung up. They tried calling her again, but there was no answer. Something was wrong. Damien cautiously went to the window. "Nico, come here..." Damien ordered. He did as he was told and what he saw out the window shocked him. There were people attacking each other, biting and ripping apart limbs from bodies. They were grotesque in appearance with their rotting flesh and bloody forms. "Wh-what is that?! What's going on?!" Nico asked feeling panicked. "Come on, we have to get somewhere safe," his brother replied. They packed food, supplies, water, and a battery-powered radio before going upstairs to their mother's room to get the pistol and packages of bullets their mother kept locked in the dresser by her bed. While upstairs, the sound of pounding on the door and breaking glass shattered the tense silence. "We have to get out of here," Nico hissed under his breath. Damien loaded the gun and took a deep breath, "We are." BANG! BANG! BANG!
Gunshots snapped Nico out of thoughts and he jumped to his feet. He wasn't sure on what move to make, but decided to venture out of the "safe zone" that was his camp and scout out his surroundings. Gunshots meant survivors. And survivors could mean Damien...

Lilly laughed and clapped.
"Your doing it Nico!" She exclaimed happily, looking as he held his balance now.Β

"I am? Wait, when did you let go?" Nico asked, wobbling slightly but regaining his balance.
He was amazed with himself as well as Lilly.
"You're a good teacher" he said and smiled, though he was upside down.

Lilly nodded.
"That is the way my dad taught me." She told him and flipped onto her hands and wobbled a bit as she held herself. She turned to face him and as she did her arm cramped sending her flopping onto his upside down posture and she came crashing to the dirt. Laying on her face now she laughed deeply.Β

Nico toppled over, falling onto his back once again.
The wind got knocked out of him due to his surprise fall but laughed once he caught his breath.

Lilly giggled and sat on her knees a hand in her lap.
"Sorry about that, my arm cramped up." She said rubbing it with her good arm.Β

Nico sat up cross legged with his arms set behind him, propping himself up.
"It's alright. Other than feeling like I was dying for those few seconds, I thought it was fun" he said.

Lilly smiled and crawled over to Nico and rested her Β head against one of his legs.
"Hey Nico." she said out loud. "Are you my friend now?" She asked looking up with her one large green eye, she peered innocently up at him with a questionable straight line face.Β

Nico looked down at her thoughtfully and smiled.
"Of course. Even though you tried to rob me" he laughed.
"But even so, you and I are definitely friends."

Lilly smiled and gave a small laugh.
"Well, all in all it was a failed robbery...I am new to this." She told him with a small embarrassed blush. She lifted her pinky and extended it out to him.
"Promise me you won't ever leave.. "She said with a grin.Β

Nico raised his pinky and wrapped it around hers.
"I can't make any guarantees but I promise." He said with a warm smile.

Lilly wiggled to sit up and face him.
"What do you mean no Guarantees?" She nearly exclaimed. "Your suppose to promise me with guarantees" She explained to him. She smiled a bit.Β
"I guess some guarantee is better than none?" She asked.Β

"What if I get bit tomorrow? That means I would've broken the promise and I don't want to do that. " Nico explained. "But I'll guarantee that I won't get bit or break our promise in any traumatic or dramatic way."

Lilly smiled.
"Well I guess that is as good as ever." She said leaning forward and hugging him round his neck.Β
"I promise to be the best, best friend ever Nico." She said sweetly.Β

Nico blushed and smiled.
"Same here. No matter what I'll be here for you and be a friend you'll be happy to have." he said, trying to come up with something nice to say.

Lilly smiled and then stood up, releasing him out of her grip.
"Well, since I can trust you now I want to show you something." She said extending a hand out to him.Β

Nico took her hand and stood up.
"What is it?" He asked.
Her statement had peaked his curiosity.Β

Lilly took his hand and tugged him along away from his camp site, she tugged him back towards a remote looking area of the town. The buildings had feel to ruins and created a constructed mess lay there. Lilly continued to pull him along as she carefully ducked among the debris and bricks.
"I think of this as my secret place I guess." Lilly stopped as a large hole sunk into the earth, it grew darker she carefully lead him around it and once she was around it she released his hand and pushed past a small weathered cloth. It had polka dots on it, she entered a small circle area. A bed was in a corner and a small hadn made dresser and shattered piece of mirror in one area. Here and there pieces of a circus cage grew into view, the bars let out into a fairly beautiful view of what use to be a lake. Though now it had turned to a nasty green puddle of infection.Β
"At first I hated it here but, I noticed the dogs and walkers don't even bother this place." She told him as she walked over to the bars to take a peek outside,.Β

Nico took in the sights of what they passed, he hadn't been to this part of the town before. He looked around her secret place, taking notice of the things there then turned his attention to the lake. "Really? I wonder why that is..." he said as he followed behind her.

Lilly shrugged.
"I think it's the lake, or maybe just because it looks like it is dead." She told him and extended her arms out. "I guess this is my camp, but your welcome here any time your in trouble or need to escape a horde. They typically fall right in that hole, they are so stupid they cant go around." She told him. "I don't know how that thing got here but it has come in handy."Β

Nico grinned and gave a light laugh.
"Thanks. I'll keep that in mind." He replied then looked out at the lake again.
"This place must've been really nice to go to be for all the happened."

Lilly nodded.
"Yeah, I imagine so..just imagine the crystal lake looking down at it from a 10 story high building." She smiled extending her arms out big and high.Β
"You know it's days like this I miss the circus, it wo-" Lilly cut her line short as she heard a few faint voices and some foot steps. She exchanged a fearful glance to Nico and furrowed her brow. She eased over to the curtain and pushed it aside, she heard the deep bellows.Β
"Someone is in here." She whispered letting the curtain slide closed, she felt stuck. No one had ever found her secret place, not no one. No one ever thought to come out here...someone had to have been watching. She took Nico's hand and pulled him with her over to the corner with the bed she ducked down behind it with her whip out. Lilly did not have an emergency way out because she hadn't thought too, the bars could easily be knocked away and climb out around the nasty lake but that would take too long right now. The voices grew closer and they were deep voices, the voice of men.Β

Nico heard the voices and whipped out his machete. By the sound of it, it seemed as though they were outnumbered and the men were most likely stronger and bigger than him. But that wasn't an excuse to not put up a fight if he had to defend himself and Lilly.

Lilly pulled his whip off her side and she was ready to lash out, as there shadows shown outside the curtain she stiffened. A buff man snatched it down and stepped in, he was dark and his hair was cut short. He was a black man, behind him followed a smaller guy, he was white with brown hair. Cut down to it's scalp. Sort of like a barber cut, then one more with black hair and it covered part of his face. He had a pink scar on his cheek and the buff man adjusted his gun. The black haired man held a sword and the other held an ax with a gun strapped on the side.Β
"It looks like someone is living here." The buff man stated as he walked over to the mirror and glanced at some of the items, picking up the photo of Lilly and her lion.Β
"Looks like a girl's been staying here." He said holding up Lilly's wrist ribbon and a skirt with frilly pearls and pink ruffles on it.Β
"Maybe she left." The black hair guy stated.Β
"No, shes here.." The buff man said sniffing. "I can still smell her."
Lilly grew angry as they touched her things, moved around her items.Β
"Come on out little girl, we won't hurt you." The brown haired man said. Lilly frowned and tightened her grip on her whip.Β

Nico tightly held his machete and kept still. His nerves were on edge. He stared at them and was dying to figure out a plan of action. It honestly creeped him out how the man could smell Lilly. With his free hand he reached for the pistol he kept in his bag. It was for emergencies but this seemed like it could be one.

The buff man turned to the bed and took another deep breath.
"Come on out you." He said in a deep voice, Lilly held her breath and tried not to breath. She got her whip arm ready.
Β "Yeah come on out kid, we ain gonna hurt you." The shaved head guy snickered and the guy with the black hair gave him a smack.
"Shut the hell up you sound like a pedophile."Β
"Get outta there ya here!?" The buff man said and as soon as a few seconds went by the man grabbed the bed in a swift motion and snatched it throwing it across the room. It smacked the bars and the bars sent a loud crashing sound about the quiet land. Lilly screamed as they were reveled, and the man laughed deeply at the two kids. Lilly swung her whip out at him and managed to grab a leg it snatched him down and he groaned angrily as the other two dashed to help.Β

Nico stood with his machete in front of him and his pistol hidden behind his back as a last resort. He was glaring daggers at the men. Three big guys with dangerous weapons against two kids with slightly less dangerous weapons. Good odds? Yeah sure.

Lilly stood with the whip out and ready and they all slowed down, the man with the gun got up slowly rubbing his head he pulled his gun.
"You little bastard!..do you have any idea who you are dealing with?" He asked and Lilly glared.
"An asshole!" She shot back and the brown haired man snickered only to be hit by the black haired guy.Β
"Smart little bitch aren't you?" He narrowed his eyes, then looked to Nico. "What do you think your going to do with that thing?" He barked, Lilly glanced over to Nico and when her gaze shifted the brown haired man in a slick motion grabbed the end of her whip and snatched her to him, grabbing both her wrist he held her tight. "Whoaaaa....not so touch are you now sweet heart?" Lilly thrashed and wiggled. "Let me go you ass!" She cried out and let her head turn to his arm holding her and she gave him a big bite, she bit down until she felt blood rush into her teeth. The man screamed.
"Get the little bitch off me!" The black haired guy grabbed her upper arm and snatched her off of him and shoved her to a hard piece of the wall. Lilly whined in pain. "OW!" The brown haired man held his hand i anger "You don't think she has that infection do you?!" The buff man snarled. "Stop acting like fools!" He glanced over his shoulder at them.Β

While the buff man had drawn his attention away, Nico took the opportunity to run at him and hit him in the stomach with handle of his machete.
The surprise force caused him to stumble back into the other two.
He quickly went to Lilly. "You okay?" He asked her, not taking his eyes off the men.

The man stumbled causing the brain haired man to tumble down to the floor, the black haired man stumbled but regained balance. Lilly turned to Nico and nodded quickly before snatching her her whip end and taking his hand to run.
The man scrambled behind them as Lilly lead him around the large hole.
"Oh god..oh god!" She cried out.Β

Nico with Lilly ran around the large hole. He looked back to see the three men at their heels. He cursed under his breath and kept running.

Lilly tried to speed up but her legs would only carry her so far, as she turned to glance back around at the men she started ducking wildly through the debris.
"Where the hell did they come from!?" She wined and then screamed as a shot was fired at them, barely winging past a piece of debris.
Lilly got to the outside and there before them lay nothing but open land and then the care from where the men had came.Β
"Can you drive?" She asked in a out of breath manner as she ran to the car, scrambling acorss the drivers seat into the passenger side. The keys lay dangling in the ignition.Β

"Kinda." Nico said as he hopped into the driver's seat. He turned the keys, forcing the engine to roar to life.
"Now what do I do.... now what do I do...." He mumbled to himself.
The men were getting closer.

Lilly screamed and pushed the car into drive, she then leaned down and slammed his foot onto the gas.
"DRIVE!" She cried out, she had learned about putting the car into gear from her father. They drove trucks to pull the circus carts and such, she was suppose to be taking drives ed but they never got around to it.Β

"Ow my foot!" Nico hissed but kept his eyes fixed on what was is from of them. He turned to wheel every so often to keep the car steady. They drove past the men who shot at them a few times, aiming for them and tires.

Lilly's head arose as soon as the gun fire stopped and they out drove them, she sunk down into the passengers seat and it didn't bother her until now but a side pain sent her to look down and there she was the blood. A bullet had grazed her leaving a nasty gash. I guess the heat of the moment left her pretty unaware of the pain.
She tried to ignore the pain now as she place her hand on top of the wound to keep it form making a mess. she turned to start rambling in the back of the truck, there was liquor, some hand guns with no ammo and then a small kit. It only had a gauze and some needle and thread she took the gauze and wrapped it awkwardly around her side.
"I have never been shot before.." She laughed painfully to Nico

Nico slammed on the brakes.
"You were shot?! Let me see!"
He had seen gun wounds, he had them, and he treated them.
Quickly he looked in the rear view mirror for the men but when they didn't appear he looked back at her in concern.

Lilly nearly hit the dash board, and she squealed at his sudden outburst. She blushed a bit as she held her side awkwardly with the gauze.Β
"I-it's fine really, I think he just grazed me bad." She told him, Lilly hadn't seen such concern on his face before she felt sorta guilty for making him worry so much.Β

"I'm sorry but no you're not! Now let me see!" Nico nearly shouted. "You wanna bandage it properly so it won't get infected and it could be deep enough to need stitches!"

Lilly winced a bit and as he yelled Lilly stopped being so stubborn.Β
"I-i'm sure it's not that bad." She kept trying to say that so she wouldn't freak out, the blood was a lot thicker as it kept coming. She removed her bloody hands to allow Nico access to her wound.
"I-it stings really bad.." She mumbled almost mindlessly. Β

Nico leaned over from the driver's seat and examined her wound.
"I know it does but you're gonna have to be tough..." he said to her, his tone soft and gentle. With careful fingers, he moved Β the gauze and a bit of her shirt away from the wound, not wanting to cause her any more pain. He clicked his tongue and looked for the kit she had gotten the gauze from. "It's deep..." he said.

Lilly felt a bit better at the shift in his voice, she was never one to handle things like this well. When he mentioned the word 'deep' she froze a bit.
"W-wha? Like how deep you don't need to..like s-ew it or anything?" She asked in a small fluster, her face turning a bit pale. Lilly shook just a tad as her hands lifted away from her wound to let him get to it.

Nico looked at her and nodded then grabbed the kit. "It needs just a few..." he said. He could see how shaken she was so he set his hands on her shoulders. "Look at me and take a deep breath. I have to sew it up and it's going to hurt but I know you can handle it..." he spoke softly, his expression was calm.

Lilly's face remained pale, the slight redness now flowed to her ears. The pain was killing her, like a gnawing pain at her side it was annoying it was making it hard to take deep breaths. But she tried, slowly she took a deep breath, small scared tears rolled down her eyes.Β
"I hate stupid men,and there dumb guns." She whined trying to focus her eyes on Nico's face, she did not dare to look down. She lifted her hands and grabbed onto the end of Nico's coat just in case she needed something to squeeze.Β
"Im going to try not to pass out from being frightened and seeing red." She told him in a hushed whisper.Β

Nico smiled and used the sleeve of his jacket to wipe away her tears. "There's my brave friend. Now you can do what you like to get your mind off the pain." he said and took out the needle and thread. He pulled the thread through the eye of the needle and placed his hands gently on her wound. "On the count of three I'm going to put the needle in, ok?" He said. "1...2..." Before he got to three he stuck the needle through her skin.

Lilly felt comfort in his words and his calming gestures, and things were fine until the needle poked into her already raw skin. Lilly gave a small muffled scream, and she turned her head to the side she wanted to bury her face into his chest but she couldn't even move toward that way.
"Oww..." She whined with painful tears streaming from her bright green eyes. "It stings..like bees." She said as she swallowed a bit, pain wasn't her best factor.Β

"Shh...shh... I know, I know it does but you have to bear with me..." Nico spoke calmly, trying his best to comfort her. He slid the string through her skin and began sewing the gash closed. "You can do it my brave lion tamer..." It hurt him to see her cry and be in pain and it made him feel guilty for causing her that pain.

Lilly whined deeply as he grew higher into the wound, Lilly muffled her screams in whimpers.
"I'm brave...but..it hurts so much." She cried out she hated the tears, and acting like such a cry baby but it hurt. She felt like she wanted to vomit, she tried not to wiggle which was hard when you were in pain. Because all you wanted to do was wiggle.Β
"Nico..." She groaned out in a plea for him to stop, she knew it was only to help but...it just hurt.Β

Nico bit his lip and tried to maintain his composure.
"I know it hurts but I'm almost done." His voice trembled lightly. But a shaky voice was better than shaky hands.
"Try not to move so much you're making it harder for me to finish..." he dabbed blood away from the wound with his sleeve.
After a few minutes, the job was done and he took great care in wrapping her side with the gauze.
"See? All done..."

Lilly struggled to keep still, she had cold sweat beading off her forehead. When he announced he was done she gave a sigh of relief. Her whole body relaxed from its tense state and her side was now just a nagging throbbing pain. Lilly wiped away some tears an then fell forward burying her fave into his cheat. "Im sorry..thank you for helping me" she whinpered into his chest. Lilly's face started to regain its cherry color,her cheeks less pale.

Nico hugged her and petted her hair.
"It's alright. I told you I'm here for you... just don't try to keep things like that from me again. You had me worried..." he whispered in a shaky voice, it was his turn to shake a little. He then patted her on the back and did what he could to comfort her. "I'm sorry I had to put you through more pain..."
