Description My grandmother is a survivor of many things, the most recent being breast cancer. She was always full of life, beautiful and a woman to be reckoned with but her battle with cancer seemed to snuff some of that joie de vive and part of her was lost. This picture was taken at an event following her last batch of radiation treatments. I had been watching her all day and suddenly she burst into uncontrollable laughter and I had to grab my camera. I showed this to her later to remind her of who she is inside, regardless of what happened on the outside and she was very touched. On an important side note, I really liked this photo because you can see how protective my grandfather is.

Please note that my grandmother passed away on April 13, 2007

I have to disagree with an earlier comment saying that this shot was beautiful "technically."

While the story behind the subject(s) is nice enough, I feel there are certain aspects of the shot that could have made it more appealing.

First of all, there are at least two too many "stubs," such as the plastic cup and whatever is rearing its ugly head in the bottom left. Secondly, the flower between them at the top looks almost like it's a part of your grandfather's hair or something. I think that burning the background could have made the subjects stand out better, as well as positioning your grandparents somewhere else in the frame to make it easier on the eyes to really look at them.

Nevertheless, I adore the fact that your grandmother is surviving all that she's gone through.

Then argue with that person as I never claimed to have been going for a technically amazing shot. Cheers

I'm so glad that you're grandmother has survived cancer. Sickness has to be one of the worst things in this bittersweet world. My grandmother wasn't so lucky, she died last year of lung cancer.
I love this picture. I can see contentment, sadness, and happiness all in it at the same time. She's showing that she's not given up, and neither has your grandfather. And the grayscale is a nice addition too.
I'm happy for you.
Nice work, definately keep it up!

I suppose that's the irony, she's currently got lung cancer a second time and it's fatal.. but still a fighter, always will be

My grandma has a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiform, and currently there is no cure for it. It is the absolute worst thing to see... Just like your grandma she used to be really energetic, really up beat and eccentric, she was just..amazing. The cancer and the treatment have both just..robbed her of herself. It's like she's simply not there anymore. Since it's a brain tumour she has gotten progressively worse with speaking and communicating, and the treatment has been absolutely horrible on her physically, it's even hard to see what she use to look like with how she is now, it's just...so awful. Just a year and a half ago she was a beach-loving hippy roller-skating grandmother (oh yes.) and now she needs help to get up and down the steps. She took me and my brother to new york city where some chick stole our cab, she flicked her off like a good grandmother would and then spent the rest of the day apologizing and laughing about it, now she can barely form a sentance.

It's just not fair, at all. She's spent her whole life keeping her side of the family together, they're mostly made of chain smoking alcoholic screw ups, and she's been the rock that held them close. She's amazing, lots of other people suck, and now she's the one with uncurable brain cancer?

Anyway...if you haven't figured it out this photo makes me think of her, and how I hope I can see her once again just like I'm seeing your grandmother right now. It really is beautiful.

This is a beautiful and touching photo. It's so nice to hear that your grandmother has remained so strong and positive through all this time.

I had a gradmother who had been fighting cancer for over 14 years, and she never in all that time complained or even frowned about it, although I'm sure it hurt her inside. Sadly she passed away three years ago, but the memories she created for me will never be forgotten.

This image reminds me of the spirit she carried with her. It's lovely to see the same spirit in your grandmother
