Description
Prev /NextHaving finished her delivery Derpy finds an old (and apparently determined) acquaintance. On a schedule, Derpy spends a few moments catching up before they say what came to be their final farewells.
Turns out the weekend livestreams don't always kill my internet connection, and the artists are quite willing to offer suggestions. I know what I need to practice though, textures.
Edit: Made the picture larger, modified a few details like the eyes and mane.

Knowing what's coming, this is a very poignant image.

I really like how you manage to shade your pictures very well while also portraying the cartoonish facial expressions. That's when things easily gets into the uncanny valley, and a mistake many talented artists does.
I really really really like your shading, I'd love to learn it.

Most of it is just starting with a black and white sketch, blending the shading where the light does and doesn't hit, making sure that the furthest parts from the light are darker than the closest parts, and following references for scales of parts. After that you colorize the black depending on where the viewer should look (blue is distant, brown-red is the focus), possibly making the deep shadows darker or more blue. Add a color layer underneath that, add a highlight layer for eyes and things and another layer for making fixes to the shading/hair and details.
(later on I run it through a program like photoshop for lens correction and lens blur effects to make it look like a poor quality photograph plus color corrections in case I made the whole picture too washed out)

Oh wow, I did not expect you give an actual "lesson", let alone such a detailed one, thanks!
I've never thought about the thing with warmer shading being in focus and colder being further away, really, thanks for the tips!
I'm going to try this out within the next few days!

I like that pony's design. This is a fantastic picture of her. Your paintings look so full and 3D.

I'm still experimenting with shading techniques, I particularly liked how this one came out so I might return to this way of doing it once I've finished these tests.

nice concept. I think you did a good job on this. Β and yep textures are the main part of rendering. but you need practice with the shading as well. It don't get that dark on her belly because light reflect from everywhere and the darkest part of the shadows are places that not much light could have access to. For instance the counter would be darker on the plane facing derpy because the light seem to emit from the top left corner of the camera as some parts suggest. But the wings suggest light source from the top right corner are there two suns? or a lamp hanging from a baloon on one side? that would be cool if so it's good shading
^^
still I like this concept and I think you did a great job.

You know, I'm happy that you didn't say the banner mare's name in the description. I hate the name Peachy Pitt because it doesn't go with her at all. I prefer to call her Gold Scroll, and I have since the very beginning.
P.S. Sorry for the very small rant, there. I just love the character and don't like that she has that name.
P.P.S. I got off-topic again. I love this image and it's very pretty. The shading and lighting are great. Very realistic.

Peachy Pitt is the OC of Erica Pitt, though in ponyland to my knowledge regular names like "Diane" are quite rare, so it would make sense to convert the first name to some sort of theme, the most recognizable thing with a pit in them is a peach so- Peachy Pitt.

Yeah. I know all that. I've read up on the topic. Thanks, though. But, I feel like it's kind of a rude thing to name a pony after yourself, especially if it doesn't even go with their personality. I just feel that Gold Scroll better suits her.

She's also a little older, since at this point in the story the characters are quite a bit older and have grey streaks in their manes. You'd think by now she would have a shop set up somewhere, or at least something that wasn't thrown together in five minutes, but you go where the work takes you.

She isn't, she's strapped to the booth. And the booth is being held aloft by balloons. Hopefully Pokey Pierce doesn't show up.

Well, he could float up on balloons and greet her, accidentally bursting a couple of her balloons in the process, and when she shouts at him he also bursts a couple of his balloons and they both float down to the Equestrian mainland. If that were the case, I hope they had enough time to get away from the falling debris and intense radiation.

Originally I was going to have a countdown timer but I felt it wasn't necessary and didn't add to the picture. This one was going to be "fourteen minutes remaining".

I never thought I'd have an "It's all ending soon" feeling from an artwork. I guess it's helped by the fact I'm listening to A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth.
