Incredible feeling of depression & hopelessness comes though this painting. Not sure what she has lost ( a love, her memory, her will to live, or her sanity) but she is like a shell without it.

I think I was thinking about the river Lethe in Greek Mythology, or one of the rivers in hell. You drink from the river to forget everything. I imagined someone in such despair that they would want to submerge themselves in the waters of this river. It's also part of my series of paintings on Ophelia, who is driven to drown herself by Hamlet's rejection.
